Embracing Your Purpose: A Profile of Christy Kern “On a dark, cool rainy night in the wee hours of the morning after attending a Tim McGraw concert at Tin Hall, I was accompanied by a volunteer firefighter as we rolled up upon the scene of a gruesome car accident involving two cars,” Christy recalls. As a bystander, she could sense the horror and yet felt the excitement at the same time. The event flashed before her eyes as she watched the various uniformed personnel hurrying, carrying medical supplies. The volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians hands moved swiftly as they worked to assess the injured victims. All at once without warning came a fierce gust of wind and the roar of chopper blades cutting through the air. “The brightest …show more content…
While working two part-time jobs in the emergency room, as an EMT-B and a registration clerk, Christy finally was able to complete her prerequisites and apply to the Associate degree nursing (ADN) program. Then to her heart’s contender, hard work finally resulted in admission to the ADN program. However, Christy’s accomplishments did not go without many struggles financially, emotionally, and physically, just when Christy thought she had pushed herself to the max she was starting a new, more challenging obstacle. Her new routine would require relocation to an area closer to the college, for access to student services such as tutoring labs, computers, printers, and any number of other essentials she needed for nursing school. Christy recalled, “Pulling up my big girl britches” and entering the financial aid office where she spent many hours interrogating special financial aid representatives for any assistance to a young adult in her situation. Burning the candle at both ends, she attended the nursing program full time, worked every weekend, attended clinical rotations a minimum of two days a week, and all with never missing a beat. Christy’s had made up her mind; absolutely nothing would stand in her way. Naturally, …show more content…

Being an Emergency Room nurse for 7 years and working as a traveling nurse in many different parts of the country has impacted my future and decision of going back to school. My personal career goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with specialization in pediatric critical care area, mainly pediatric emergency medicine. I have known since a very young age that I had a gift for working with children. My colleagues always call me the “pediatric nurse”. I feel it takes a very special type of person to work with pediatrics, and this is where my heart is. I chose to become a FNP to broaden my area of expertise and to leave multiple doors open to work in different areas. I have
It's a fundamental belief of mine that each one of us is brought upon this world with a major definite purpose in life. Everyone has a unique destiny for contributing to this world using their unique blend of talents and passions. I have no doubt that most people today work hard and stay busy with daily activities. The problem I've noticed is that many people live their lives without any sense of meaningful purpose that gives their lives passion and significance. They get caught up in the daily mechanical routines of life and they become creatures of habit rather than purpose-driven beings. Finding and shaping your major definite purpose is perhaps the most important thing that you will ever do in your life because your purpose is the driving force that spawns all the achievements that you will ever accomplish and it provides that unlimited source of motivation that drives you to achieve all the goals that you set for yourself and enables you to live life to the fullest.
Since my freshman year of high school I knew that I would be an asset to the healthcare world. I decided that I wanted to become a Nurse Practitioner. I would love to specialize as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Since I was in the 10th grade, I knew I wanted to pursue my education at Mount Vernon Nazarene University for nursing. Furthermore, my first college visit on MVNYOU day confirmed my decision. I greatly treasure the close knit community and the Christian based morals. To get a head start on my journey, my sophomore year I applied and was accepted into the Career and Technology Education Center of Licking County for Clinical Care (C-TEC), a nursing based program. In the duration of my last two years of high school, instead of simply graduating with my diploma, I graduated with my STNA, CET, CPT, CPCT, and my CPhT. I have gained a knowledge of the basic fundamentals of nursing. I am an active member of many different clubs and organizations supporting

As they say, there is no such thing as a free lunch. This ideal holds true for anyone interested in attaining career success or achieving a major goal. One of such career goals is evident in becoming a Registered Nurse. There are about 154,000 Registered Nurses in the state of Ohio (KFF, 2016) Nurses represent the highest proportion of all working professionals in the United States (KFF, 2016). There are about 3 million Registered Nurses in this country and the number continues to increase as baby-boomers retire, while hospitals, clinics, health centers continue to seek nurses that will provide various forms of specialized care (KFF, 2016). Due to this phenomenon, nursing education is made very arduous for anyone interested in pursuing this field of study (AACN, 2016). The American Association of Colleges of Nurses in Ohio attributes the arduous nature of the field of study to the increasing demand as well as transformation of the healthcare services (AACN, 2016). The signing of the new Healthcare law has led to transformative changes in many ways, by influencing ways in which healthcare is provided such as preventative care and also increasing the number of insured, which increases overall services rendered (AACN, 2016).
Though the field of nursing is currently mixed with Associate and Bachelor prepared nurses, the Associate prepared nursing role was originally created in response to the need of nurses to fill a shortage created by WWII. Associate degree nurses were trained in a shorter period of time than a traditional professional nurse, in the skills of nursing in order to perform bedside care during the nursing shortage. (Berman & Snyder, 2012, pp.10-11) The Associate program was intended to be short-term solution to the immediate problem, ending with the shortage. Instead, however, Associate programs grew throughout the 1960’s becoming widely available at community colleges. Completing an Associate’s program would allow one to sit for the same NCLEX

Becoming a family nurse practitioner is my dream and my long term goal is to achieve this title and practice with it. I will be able to give back to several rural and urban communities by providing patients with quality care as a passionate family nurse practitioner. My ultimate goal after gaining immense clinical experience during my practice as a nurse practitioner is to give back to this amazing profession by transitioning to the position of a family nurse practitioner educator. The primary nurse practitioner program at South University will provide the advanced level of education I need to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to provide high quality, evidence-based patient care and ultimately impact the health of the entire population through patient education and outreach in multiple heath care settings.
The research concluded that in order to meet the needs of a complex patient demographic the number of Bachelor’s prepared nurses needs to be increased by 80% by 2020. This is a necessary move to develop more highly-educated nurses and ensure that nursing workforce is able to handle an expanded set of competencies. The focus on nursing education should be a life long journey that supports and encourages those who seek higher degree programs. The burden of student debt is one barrier in need of being addressed in order for more nurses to pursue their education further. In order to alleviate this burden and open the door for nurses to further their education, more federal grants and scholarships must be made available. In addition to the changes needed in funding, schools need to increase the capacity of their healthcare programs to accommodate all returning students. The importance of the foundation’s research is overwhelming, once these recommendations are implemented nurses will have greater support in every area. Nurses stand to gain better education options, more financial aid, better training programs for new nurses and residency programs for transitioning to a new area of practice (Education,
I have had the distinct privilege and honor of practicing the art of nursing since 2000. Throughout this time, I have seen the profession evolve through technology, practice and theory. With the recent and constant change created by the healthcare reform, today’s nurse must realize that learning is a lifelong process that does not end upon graduation. The nurse is never done learning, especially as technology and medical knowledge are constantly evolving. My most recent endeavor has been the pursuit of my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Western Carolina University. This education has broadened my mind to the opportunities nursing has to offer and has enriched my personal and professional goals.
Ever since I began nursing school in 2012 at the University of Texas At El Paso Texas, I dreamt of furthering my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.
