In past years, when people was talking about higher education, they had no hesitation to mention university immediately. When others were mentioning that college also belonged to higher education, sometimes they reacted with a wry smile, and shook their heads. Yes, even if it is for today, university gets the higher appraisal than college, and even many people think ‘‘college as America used to understand it is coming to an end.’’ As parents, they prefer their children to study in university instead of college, no matter how high of tuition the university it is. They ignore the value of college. Although sometimes college is viewed as critical by other people, we still can find its value, and how it is really beneficial for our lives, even if we don’t pursue a degree.

As a high school senior, post high school options are far and few, but the one that shines above the others is the option of attending college. Instead of going straight into the workforce in order to establish some sort of independence, college provides the opportunity to build upon academic skills, gain a step up in terms of work experience, and become more acquainted with the world and adult life without a watchful parent. It is a very impactful experience that can alter the path taken in life but it comes with a very high price, one that many aren’t able to pay and in turn are forced into tens of thousands of dollars in debt. However, the individuals in debt that did graduate have received something that to most of them was all worth it, a degree. With this, they have opened up more paths in life and immediately are more welcomed in the workforce.

Once upon a time, a college education was seen as a surefire way to launch a successful career and climb up the socioeconomic ladder. Now, due to the growth of the suburban middle class, there has been a heavy emphasis on college as the gateway to the American dream. This influx of students meant that while academia was booming, the U.S. economy was unprepared for the large amounts of graduates that were entering the workforce. The financial meltdown of 2008 did little to alleviate the problem, and an intense pressure to rise up the rankings of the U.S. News and World Report meant that colleges needed to jack up tuition prices to spend more on programs. The work of the teacher is to pass on the message to the student while the student understands and applies what has been taught. The Cambridge dictionary defines education in British English as the process of teaching or learning, especially in a school or college, or the knowledge that you get from this. It is clear this definition divide into two parts, one is on the behalf of educators and the educated, the other emphasizes the result of the process that knowledge is obtained. The former focus on the activity of the teacher delivering knowledge our students receiving knowledge while the latter counts the result of this activity.
