In the video on Human services administration: Structural framework: Authority and supervision, Andrea Ingram mentions that in administration the agenda for the day is often not what you end up doing. Administrators have to get with all departments to discuss the issues at hand and there many problems that must be addressed daily (Laureate Education, 2011). The video points out that the administrator must be the eyes and ears of an agency and take time to solve problems and consider all factors, in order to come to a correct conclusion (Laureate Education, 2011). Andrea Ingram talked about her organization having two main problems. They have a crisis service, which has staff for it. They also have a shelter with staffing for that.
Department of Human Services (DHS) is a human service organization meant to help individuals and families with temporary services in their time of need. The mission statement is: “Improving the quality of life in Michigan by providing services to vulnerable children and adults that will strengthen the community and enable families and individuals to move toward independence.” (Michigan.gov) DHS provides an array of services to individuals and families, these include: food assistance, cash assistance, health care assistance, children services, adult services, and many more.
Human Service Organization carries a huge responsibility of serving people who is one of their own community. The services provided by these organizations not only serve an individual but also creates a bond and place one in a position of social worth. Alternatively, it could be stated as mentioned in the chapter “These organization improves quality of life of an individual by meeting his/her needs, and offer them an opportunity to practice their professional skills.” There are circumstances that affect how these organization functions. Certain welfare services have a long waitlist, social stigma arises when one starts using such services.

Everyone involved whether a professional member or the client holds a important role to the organization. The role of the client is to allow for the organization to be able to help them in the best way possible and, to be open to making the changes needed to thrive in everyday life. The role of the professional is to provide the client with the best help that they could possibly receive. In order for the professional to complete the role that they have they must start the process in the best way possible they must collect the appropriate information from the possible client in the beginning.
Losing funding when running a human service program can be devastating to not only the person running the program but also to those who are taking part of the services that the program provides. To lose the backing from the faith-based funders and have to rely strictly on the funds from the federal government changes the entire concept of how the program can be ran. Losing faith-based funding and going to a government ran program will have an impact not only on the clients that use the program but also the staff members that are there because of the mission, beliefs and vision that the program originally had.

Within the department of Social Services all the roles are in a hierarchy system. At the bottom of the system is where a service user would make first contact with the department. This is where the service user would be assessed to deem whether the potential user is eligible to receive help and to which department would offer the service user the most appropriate help, for instance whether they would benefit from being referred to the mental health team or another relevant department. It is important that the first assessment is carried out thoroughly in order for the service user to get the help they need if they are vulnerable and if there are any safeguarding issues. The structure of a social services department is organised in such a way that there are specialist teams available to deal with various issues that affect service users. If someone has a mental health problem they will be able to receive specialist help from the mental health team, who will liaise with other professionals within the mental health sector such as psychiatrists and community mental health nurses, so that the service user can access all the available resources available and receive a positive outcome to their experience. The children and family’s department will be able to offer specialist help in supporting parents and children to stay together or if needs be intervention and safeguarding. These social workers will have specialist knowledge of how to interact with children and their families to

No matter what the reason is for the help, it is an inevitable that people need it. In these times of need, people may wonder who they can turn to for help. This question often goes unanswered because people are so unsure. Rest assured, however, that Human Services is here to help. People just need to know where to look and even how to look for this help.
Throughout the article there were many key themes discussed by the authors. The article is about restructuring human services in Canada which can be a complex topic due to various opinions and attitudes toward the services provided. The article studies the services provided to individuals with development disabilities only, to me this would be a theme (Pedlar & Hutchison, 200). In my opinion it would have been useful for the authors to explain why they chose to study only those with developmental disabilities. Is it because they use the most services, were they simply interested in developmental disabilities or was there another specific reason they chose this group? The second theme that was discussed is how services are affected by funding.
