A name is one of the first things we are defined with; it's a simple combination of words that becomes associated with our being. In Children of Monsters, Jay Nordlinger questions how much significance a name really holds. Each of the children mentioned in the book thus far have been related (or at least thought that they were related) to a well-known and brutal dictator. Their views on their fathers differ greatly. Some of the children, such as Jean-Marie Loret (he believed himself to be Hitler’s son) blindly praised their fathers by hanging large portraits upon their walls in their memories, while others, such as Svetlana (Stalin’s daughter) did their best to distance themselves from their father’s platform of hatred by traveling around the world. It was not the children’s actions that interested me the most in my reading however; it was the way they associated themselves with their surname. …show more content…
When Mussolini did not prevent the death of Edda’s husband, something he had the full capability of doing, she was torn. In a letter to her father she wrote, “You are no longer a father for me. I renounce the name Mussolini” (Nordlinger 13). In this statement Edda is associating her surname with evil, and wishes to abandon it. In a similar way, Stalin’s daughter Svetlana attempted to erase herself of the dictator name by adopting her mother’s surname Alliluyeva. She claimed that, “I could no longer tolerate the name of Stalin...Its sharp metallic sound lacerated my ears, my eyes, my heart” (Nordlinger 46). The names themself held no harm against these women, it was the association the names held. Edda wished to escape her hurtful and grieving past, while Svetlana wished to forget the awful things her father had been a part
1Joseph Stalin was born on December 18, 1878. His given name is Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili or Ио́сиф Виссарио́нович Ста́лин in Russian. He was born in what would now be Georgia in a place called Gori, Tiflis Governerate, Russian Empire. Stalin’s family lived in poverty all throughout his childhood. His father worked as a cobbler mending shoes and his mother was a maid. He was very violent towards his son and was an avid alcoholic. The family’s home was a small shack off of a dirt road. They had a serious problem with the home constantly being wet with sewage. Stalin had many issues with disease as a child. First he caught smallpox at the age of seven. As a result of the smallpox, scars were left on his face. This would become an area of embarrassment for Stalin throughout his childhood. Stalin also caught blood poisoning as a child. This was a result of one of the brutal beatings his father gave him while drunk. Because of this one of his arms became deformed and stopped growing causing him to lose use of the hand. Because of the intense beatings Stalins father gave him, he began to hate him. One Stalin became old enough he tried to fight back so his father would not beat his mother. Stalin received education at his local church school because of Czar Alexander III’s educational
At the age of 10, Joseph “Stalin” Djugashvili attended Gori’s religious elementary school. His mother, Yekaterina, wanted him to be a priest and would usually beat her son if he son whenever he misbehaved. These beatings were never as bad as those
The image of Stalin depicted in the poster 1.5.8 () , portrays Stalin as ‘God like,’ we see a figure, being looked upon by dancing children who are dressed in uniforms, looking up to Stalin as a strong ‘father like defender of the nation.’ (Pittaway, 2008p.142.) This ‘father’ title gave the impression that Stalin is trustworthy and caring. In addition, children presented a myth and used as propaganda to represent goodness, innocence, and the future. Stalin’s ideology was that if the children liked him, then he must be a good leader. Furthermore, the inscription shows
The idea of what a monster is and how it pertains to modern day society has fascinated readers and writers for decades. Before taking this class, I was aware of what a monster is and the function it served in today’s society. Furthermore, after taking this class, I am now aware of what a monster truly is, and what really separates a monster from a regular person. The piece of text that I mainly chose to focus on and elaborate closely to demonstrate the aspects of a monster is appropriately named, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers. The reason I chose this piece of literature is because, Monster thoroughly elaborates what a monster is in todays society and how it functions in the modern day world. In this essay I will elaborate on
In her article “Be Specific,” Natalie Goldberg mentions the importance of being specific and giving things their proper name. By doing so we are able to connect with the world on a much deeper level, thus allowing us to become conscious of our surroundings and recognize the uniqueness these objects bring to this world. A name is a unique way of distinguishing people from one another. It is an important aspect of our individuality and who we are as people. It reveals who we are and where we come from.
According to the dictionary the meaning of the word name is ; a word or phrase that refers to or that can refer to a specific person (webster dictionary). A name is actually more than that. On December 13, 2000 I was born and given the name Sheena Ailanie Williams. My mom told me that while she was sitting in her bedroom, a movie came on the television screen.Sheena, The Jungle Queen was the name of the movie my mother named me after. For years people would ask me my name and responded with, “ Like the jungle queen!” sooner or later I started to think of myself as queen of the jungle. It made me feel important and special. People
There is such kind of monsters, remain their appearance as a human, yet the things they do can only describe as monstrosities. They are not monsters in books and literature, a fear of unknown or sexual desires. People were, or still are facing actual brutal violence or psychological terror from those monsters. More importantly, the monster being talked here is one of our kind. They are human, yet described as “inhuman”, under the inhuman category of Stephen T. Asma’s book On Monsters, a bloody history, a dark past of humanity have been introduced as a monster. It is Khmer Rouge’s infamous security prison S21: the representation of the massacre took place in Cambodia in 20th century and this kind of monster, unfortunately, is still relevant to the world, even till this day.
The book I chose is called Monster by Walter Dean Myers. This novel won the Coretta Scott King award , the Printz award , and was also a National Book Award Finalist. Monster is the name and thing that Steve considers himself as he has gotten in a bit of trouble. This novel took place in Harlem New York in mid year of 1997. Steve harmon was in a drug store while some of the people he has been seen around the neighborhood with stuck the place up and murdered the owner of the store in cold blood now he is on trial for Felony 1 murder and this is the story of his trail. Our lives compare to each others in many ways. There are thousands of inferences that could be made
“They were the most famous orphans of the cold war. (Roberts).” This powerful sentence is used to describe the impact that the Rosenbergs death had on their children and the media. Both brothers, along with a whole group of people,
A name is given to every human child at birth. It is used mostly by those around an individual as a way to identify them. Without names people would have a difficult time communicating things to other people. Names in fiction represent a character in his or her entirety. Usually having deeper meaning like explaining a character's origin, names are given to characters with a purpose. Authors might hide a plot twist or hidden meaning in a name like Darth Vader, Vader meaning father in Dutch and also in German.
In the drama, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” by Rod Serling, Charlie quickly suspects Tommy because he wants to keep the focus off of him. In order to keep the focus off of him, he blames Tommy. They believed Charlie because the residents of Maple Street do not want to be the scapegoat, or the person to blame.
Language is the means we use to express ourselves, and in language, we use certain words to stand out from one another, our names. Names are what we use to distinguish ourselves from others in a group and they can hold special meaning. Changing from one name to another can have an impact on how one is viewed and how ones view themselves.
Rick Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters is a fictional book about the greek gods. If this book were put into my own life, it would be very different. In the story, most of it is based in New York. Since I do not live in New York, the setting will have most likely changed. I believe that the location of Mount Olympus would be changed from the Empire State building, instead to the SunTrust Plaza in Downtown Atlanta. The location of Camp Half-Blood would also have to be changed. The camp’s location is currently on Long Island, NY, but it would probably be changed to a Georgia barrier island, like Sapelo Island.
Occasionally throughout the chapters a picture of a dictator’s child will be included. Looking into the eyes of these children causes a lot of thought. What was their life like? Did they admire their evil father? Their faces are full of innocence and unknowingness. Do they really understand what their father does?
As we grow up we receive three names in our lives; the ones we receive from our parents, the names our friends call us, and the ones we must make for ourselves. People take names as a serious matter because they tend to judge someone by their names before even getting to know them. The majority of individuals I know either truly accepts their names in its entirety or is completely unpleased with it. For me, I am someone who seems to be just right in the middle of them both.
