Leadership comes in many different forms but they all are heading toward the same goal; and that is to communicate with people. Some people are silent leaders and lead by example some are more vocal. Nevertheless, whatever type of leader you are, there are certain criteria that must be met. For example being a good role model, being dependable, being trust worthy, these are all things that a true leader must possess. However, all leaders have their strengths and weakness and these are a few areas in which men and woman striving to become leaders often have trouble dealing with. All to often leaders become over defensive and it beings to tear away at the seams of a cohesive unit. A little defensiveness is healthy self-protection...like …show more content…
Which crisis do they want handled first? A flat "no" is always confrontational even if not expressed aggressively. Being assertive just means speaking firmly about how you feel about a situation. It is less confrontational to refer to YOUR feelings rather than the other's behavior. The other party as an attack may experience arguing even if you speak gently. You can be assertive simply by asking questions making statements is more confrontational if you are trying to make a point, ask questions to lead the other party to your conclusions. Emphasizing areas of agreement before discussing differences defuses conflict and confrontation Assertiveness...getting the words and the balance just right takes a lot of practice. Practice works best with frequent feedback from someone you trust. You need to be assertive to keep yourself from sliding into burnout due to excessive stress. The benefit to you is control over your priorities rather than being driven by demands, you feel unable to manage. Delegating - What's the difference between delegation and empowerment? Empowerment relates to larger scale culture change it involves instituting a completely new way of working. Delegation refers to specific, one-off, decisions it means letting someone else make decisions you normally make Just giving someone tasks to do is not really delegation For a specific project, decision or period, someone is your delegate. The challenge is to give clear direction but
As a Naval Officer I had the opportunity to experience both leadership and management. Today's Navy operates with fewer people and resources than before. Therefore, leadership and management are more important than ever. Very early in my career I was taught leadership and as I advanced through the ranks I experienced management.
In my four years of highschool I have developed many characteristics that allow me to be a strong leader. I have found that being a leader is something that comes natural to me. I have found my self leading in many different situations. I have been a varsity baseball and football captain for two years. I have had to lead a team, and communicate with teammates and coaches. I know how to collaborate with others to perform well in competition. I take pride in being chosen to be the leader of my teams, I enjoy being a reliable and responsible person for others to count on. Leadership is a great quality no matter who the person.
Do I possess the traits and behaviors associated with leadership? If not, can I now learn how to be a leader at this stage of my life? What kind of leader am I? Is that the kind of leader I want to be? What do my superiors, co-workers, friends, and family think of my leadership style and ability? Why am I sometimes uncomfortable talking about myself as a leader? Working my way through the text, interviewing colleagues, and checking into other resources, I can form a personal picture and embrace a personal theory about my own leadership style and ability. I may have stirred up more questions than I am able to answer but the process has been a fascinating insight to self-discovery. The end result is a desire to try
I believe that I have strong leadership abilities. I am motivated, passionate, and a visionary. Throughout my life I feel I will make a difference in the world and inspire others to do the same so that my time spent alive is impactful and revolutionary; however, all of my hopes and dreams for leadership in my life now and in the future are put into question without structure to my leadership. I lack structure in my leadership and I feel like this opportunity would be a great chance to add structure and guidance to my leadership skills and character. The chance to be part of this leadership program would help me to become the leader I see that I will be and allow me to leave my impact on this community and the world.
What insights have I gained about my role as an educational leader from these chapters?
When looking back on my contributions to my community and society, the thought of me becoming a certified Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball coach comes to mind. After completing an interview along with certification courses, I became the head coach of a 6th grade basketball team at St. Aloysius in Bowling Green, Ohio. I classify this as a contribution to society because I made it my mission to help my players grow as both basketball players and as young men. It was my job to relay the abundance of basketball and life information I had accrued throughout the years. I took this volunteer-based position very seriously due to the importance of basketball in my life. Growing up, I had always been blessed with coaches who put developing young men and their character over anything dealing with basketball. I wanted the practices and games to be more than learning plays and basketball procedures. Rather, I wanted to instill qualities of teamwork, leadership, discipline,
The responsibilities and challenges of being the student leader of about 60 students in the Junior Reserve Officer Corps during high school inspired me to be a leader. After graduation, I joined the Virginia Army National Guard as a Combat Medic and pursued a civilian profession as an Emergency Department Technician. I began to master the position’s technical skills and learned how to build interpersonal relationships with the people around me. Knowing that leaders continue to seek out ways to personally grow, I began taking the initiative in my professional career to develop essential leadership skills and qualities. I started to take the lead role in executing new processes and worked with hospital leaders to perfect those processes which improved the quality of care and safety of our patients. In the National Guard, I have had to act as the leader of my peers within my platoon in the absence of my supervisors during my military training. Even after gaining valuable experience by working above
In developing this idea of what leadership is, I examined what was most important to me in being a leader. Since leadership is such a broad term, this could not be a process whereby I could generalize leadership for everyone. Rather, the task is to determine who I am as a leader. I asked myself, what is it that shapes the vision? What are the factors that comprise a leader, and what makes these things add up to create something larger than ourselves as leaders? Thoughtful reflections on these things lead me to generate the following definition of leadership: Leadership is about more than simply having followers; it is not a title, and it is not achieved by just following a few principles. Leadership is complex, though at its
The material covered in module five was much more concise than module three. When reading the sections in module five I found that the “Leader Influence” chapter clearly had a deeper meaning to my way of thinking than the other chapters did. This chapter clearly defined the ideology of being a good follower and a good leader. As I read through the chapter and had discussions in class, I was able to identify times that I had failed in both roles and different thought processes that would allow me to adjust my follower and leader styles to ensure that members both up and down the chain would be gaining a better product from me.
The three most important things that I have learned are based on the foundation of systems theory. Communities are made of a giant system and immeasurable subsystems acting and reacting with one another. When the various systems become unstable, resulting needs arise. Often, there are so many contributions to an issue; one has a great deal of difficulty understanding the source of the problem. Rather, the primary importance is accepting the relationships between individuals and environments. Communities must recognize that those within the system are responsible for taking the steps to provide stability for existence and intervening to strengthen existing structures (Homan, 2011).

Being a leader takes great ability. Over many years’ people have written many books and taught many ways for people to become an effective leader. One of the main things that people fail to understand that the major part of being a leader is just being yourself. You can be taught by someone techniques and ways to problem solve and how to think strategically but leadership is more than that. Being yourself flaws and all helps make you human and shows your ability that you are not perfect and makes mistakes just like everyone else. These techniques will make you gain those necessary followers who do not look for someone that is perfect but look for someone that is inspiring. Many times the necessary skills individuals need to become a leader
