In the book Macbeth by Shakespeare there are two characters named Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, and their knowledge capacity was so filled with guilt at the end of the book their mind could not take anymore. This book was written around 1606 and today we still see this today but just a different way. Throughout the book Shakespeare showed how power can change your character, and mind.
In the book, Macbeth made many mistakes, and soon some people turned against him. In act 2 scene 2 Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are talking about taking the power away from Duncan and finally having the power that is theirs. But before they talk about the power, earlier in the book they were approached by 3 witches telling them everything that was going to happen.

This supports Lady Macbeth telling Macbeth killing Duncan his best friend just to gain power which is going to change Macbeth from now on in the story. In other words, before Macbeth killed his friend Duncan he saw a floating knife in front of his door and pointing toward Duncans door “ And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood,/which was not before. There’s no such thing.” (II.1. 26) This quote shows Macbeth seeing things and now there is a bloody knife floating in front of Duncan's door which shows that Macbeth’s mind is slowly losing control with all this guilt and how Duncan was his friend and about to kill his friend just for power. Afterward, in the book Macbeth slowly makes his way to Duncan's room and Macbeth plunges the dagger into his chest. Then Lady Macbeth came into the hall and was looking at the mess and the guards for Duncan and just now truly seeing what she got into, she said “ Do mock their charge with snores. I have drugged their possets,/that death and nature do contend about them/whether they live or die.” ( II.2.27) Saying that when they wake up will they may be killed because they fell asleep on their job or will they’ll live. After killing Duncan he felt horrible and had no idea what to do with the knife or how to act. Later on Lady Macbeth, Macbeth's wife, killed herself because she couldn't handle the guilt and the punishments if they got caught, so she sadly killed herself. In the book Lady Macbeth and Macbeth worked as a married couple to get the power both of them wanted. On the other hand, throughout the book Duncan had two kids and both of them ran away due to their father, in case the killer was going to try to kill them too. Next, Banqueo secretly thinks Macbeth killed the guards at Duncan’s chamber and now again wants to secretly kill Macbeth. Following the word about Banquo trying to kill Macbeth, Macbeth hires assassin to kill Banquo. Finally, Banquo was injured but not killed and now Macbeth’s mind is holding so much guilt, therefore his wife, Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and talking in her sleep about how they killed everyone and now both of their minds are losing it more and more. In the book it talked about how the three witches talked about an attack plan in the forest. Quote says “Be lion-mettled, proud, and take no care/Who chafes, who frets, or where conspirers are./Macbeth shall never vanquished be until/Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill/Shall come against him.”(IV.1.66) This quote tells Macbeth that you must be as proud as a lion and you know you’ll need to fight just wait
In the beginning of the play, the corrupting force of power is revealed when Macbeth is transfixed by the prophecies of the weird sisters. In act one, scene three, lines 49-51, the play states “First Witch: All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! Second Witch: All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! Third Witch: All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!”. The quotation means that Macbeth knows that they will not tell him everything he wants to know. Banquo notes that they have twice told Macbeth of his rise to power. Here, Macbeth shows his susceptibility to corruption in pursuit of power.
Through the character of Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare shows how Macbeth gains power through other’s sacrifice and
The witches were the very first factor in Macbeth’s progression to becoming a power hungry and bloodthirsty character. Their speech was always laced with a hint of truth but mostly false hope as they were creatures of the supernatural. Their half prophecies played Macbeth like a puppet, constantly trying to live by their words, though they were just illusions to make his life look good, through a mirage of carefully planned schemes. Looking back at the opening of the play, Macbeth was portrayed as “brave”, as he, Banquo and his army had just won a
In the beginning of the play, Macbeth miscontruses the witches prophecies. The prophecies cause Macbeth to think differently.“All Hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter”(Shakespeare 1.3.50). The witches first tell Macbeth that he will become king but they do not tell him when or how. “... a prosperous gentleman, and to be king stands not within the prospect of belief” (Shakespeare 1.3.73-77). Macbeth knows it will be impossible to become king if the king is still alive. “Two truths told, as happy prologues to the swelling acts of the imperial theme” (Shakespeare 1.2.70-78). Since two of the witches
Before Macbeth goes through with his plan to kill King Duncan, he sees a bloody dagger floating before him. Hallucinating, Macbeth says to the dagger “I see thee still, /and on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood, / which was not so before... There’s no such thing: / It is the bloody business which informs / Thus to mine eyes” (Shakespeare, 370). When Macbeth explains the “bloody business” he is referring to the killing of King Duncan. Although Duncan has trusted Macbeth to keep him safe in his home, Macbeth’s thoughts show his contemplation whether to murder King
The witches prophecies and Lady Macbeth’s influence intensifies his ambition and drives Macbeth to obtain and maintain his title of Scotland by whatever means, even murdering his best friend, Banquo. “Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown, ...no son of mine succeeding. If’t be so, for Banquo’s issue have I filed my mind; For them the gracious Duncan I have murder’d; ...To make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings! (Act III. sc.I) At this point Macbeth’s passion becomes more and more extreme to the point where no one stands in his way. His greed, violence, and hunger for power drastically declines his
This shows that he is not entirely convinced about committing murder, but then Lady Macbeth sweeps away his rebellious thought, by telling him that Macbeth will strike whilst Duncan is asleep and ask’s why herself and Macbeth cannot kill Duncan whilst he is unprotected in his sleep, “What cannot you and I perform upon the unguarded Duncan?”
Whilst the character of Macbeth is initially portrayed as a noble kinsman, his ambition and motivation, directly influenced by the witches and Lady Macbeth, ultimately transforms him into a corrupt and ruthless tyrant. William Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy “Macbeth” clearly depicts this notion of change, illustrated through Shakespeare's utilisation of literary techniques. The tragic downfall of Macbeth is mainly attributed to Macbeth’s own greed and hubris.
Despite Macbeth 's initial reluctance towards killing Duncan, he eventually chooses to execute his beloved king, demonstrating both his lust for hegemony and lack of respect for his superiors. Just before committing the treasonous act of murder, Macbeth stares at the "dagger of the mind," and as he does so, thick drops of blood appear on the blade and hilt. Calling out to the knife, he declares, “I see thee still, / And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood, / Which was not so before" (2.1.45-47). Macbeth begins to question his sanity since a dagger appears before his eyes and blood suddenly materializes onto the hilt of the dagger but his greed, and slight delusion, suppresses correct judgement and does not stop him from committing regicide. Moreover, Macbeth’s reluctance
The influence of the Witches’ prophecy used by Shakespeare, change Lady Macbeth’s and Banquo’s decision making which goes against their integrity. After Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth describing his experience with the three witches’ and their prophecy, she speaks about Duncan’s fatal death. She says to herself, “Fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up th’ access and passage to remorse, that no compunctious visitings of nature
24-29). When Macbeth decides not to continue with their plan to murder Duncan, his wife urges him to act on his desires or he will think of himself as a coward. She says, "Art thou afeard / To be the same in thine own act and valour / As thou art in desire?" (I, vii. 42-44). She then makes sure he will perform the deed by taking an active role in preparing for the murder. "his two chamberlains / Will I with wine and wassel so convince," (I, vii. 70-71) and cleaning up afterwards, "Give me the daggers: the sleeping, and the dead / Are but as pictures; 'tis the eye of childhood / That fears a painted devil. If he do bleed, / I'll gild the faces of the grooms withal, / For it must seem their guilt." (II, ii. 69-73).
Macbeth is trying to make sense of why he killed Banquo his friend. “There to slay them, so that he would not have his house slandered but that in time to come he might clear himself if anything were laid to his charge upon any suspicion that might arise” ( Holinshed 297). Macbeth was worried that Banquo would tell everyone that Macbeth did in fact kill Duncan. Macbeth plotted to kill Banquo because he feared Banquo would overthrow him. Both Macbeth and Banquo planned to kill Duncan, Macbeth was made king after Duncan’s death.
After killing King Duncan , Macbeth is starting to realize what it is that he has done, and becomes suspicious and paranoid of everyone around him by puting spy's in every castle and killing those who are any treat to him what so ever. Banquo is the only other person who knows of the meeting with the witches and he would assume that it was Macbeth who killed the King. The witches also said that Banquo would beget kings but he himself would never be king after Macbeth, and so Macbeth decides that Banquo is a threat to him. To get rid of the treat with banquo he decides to kill him and his son Fleance.
Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare’s most powerful and emotionally intense plays. Macbeth, once known for his courage and bravery is transformed into a ruthless tyrant. His wife, Lady Macbeth, once known for her strength and great ambition is soon engulfed by guilt and sensitivity greatly weakens her. As the tragic hero Macbeth is overcome by tensions in his criminal act and the reactions by his conscience (Nix).
Complicated consequences result from the abuse of power that is central in William Shakespeare’s play ’Macbeth’ following immoral manipulation. Macbeth was written in 1606 during the reign of King James I and was used as a warning to potential threats of the King. It is a form of praise and admiration towards the King by Shakespeare as those who immorally seize power will ultimately possess a destroyed fate. Through analysing the text, we can see that abuse of power through supernatural manipulation on human nature is evident therefore guilt and delusions are consequences of that power abuse.
