Irregular warfare is an ever changing series of events with random approaches that differ from party to party. These tactics used by the enemy could be morally shocking, confusing, and seemly impossible to overcome when Marines are not prepared. There are several actions that a small unit leader is required or can take to prepare Marines for irregular warfare in future conflicts. Training Marines is by far the best action a small unit leader can take to develop the young Marines with the skills and abilities to have the edge over the enemy in irregular warfare. Teaching Marines to be critical thinkers will allow them to see the bigger picture and look at problems or approaches from different angles. Critical thinking is attaining solutions …show more content…
Irregular warfare brings many unusual situations and circumstances that the majority of the United States Marines would not normally experience in the American way of life. For instances, there is a nine year old Arabic child holding an RPG aimed at your convoy, do you kill him or do you not kill him? This is an immoral decision that has to be made or your fellow Marines may be killed. If you have not been prepared for this situation, you will hesitate and the child will fire the RPG at the convoy. These shock causing situations and circumstances will cause a delay in thinking or decision making which could lead to a life or death situation. Training to overcome gut wrenching situations by training to the mission, the priority of life, and experiences outside of normal life will allow a Marine’s second nature to assist him in the difficult decision to prevent …show more content…
The Marines ability to make a decision quickly in the heat of battle will give the Marine the advantage over the enemy. These quick decisions will allow the Marine to spend more time thinking about the enemy’s course of action or avenue of approach. Irregular warfare will consist of bazaar tactics by the enemy; however, all parties of irregular warfare are human and have similar tendencies that can be predicted and foreseen. Training to certain scenarios like weapon malfunctions, loss of key members, and loss of communication will allow Marines to take swift action in resolving the problem while not compromising the mission. While training to certain scenarios, it is important to know that it is impossible to train to every scenario that a Marine may
After the Vietnam War ended, the Marine Corps’ main focus changed from broad scale operations, to being an Expeditionary Force in Readiness. Although this was no new role for the United States Marine Corps (USMC), there have been many changes in society, technology and tactics that affect how the Corps operates. However, over the last 36 years one thing has remained the same, and that is the role of the Marine Non Commissioned Officer (NCO). With the world changing ever so rapidly, the strong values and responsibilities of the Marine NCO are now, more than ever, necessary to carry out the operations being assigned to United States Marines. The role of the NCO is characterized by their
The Marine Corps has been protecting America’s freedom and acting as a symbol of strength since 1775. The United States Marine Corps is a force for greatness, bound to the words liberty and justice, sworn to protect every American soul. Marines have battled on land, in air, and at sea for their country and many brave men and women have lost their lives in the line of fire. These brave soldiers are lead by intelligent officers who are strong leaders, quick decision makers, and possess great mental toughness. The young men and women blessed with the privilege of being officers in the Marine Corps face many hardships on their journey to greatness, yet many travel down this road and benefit from the experience greatly.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the five characteristics that enable Marines to overcome fear.
I did not know much about the military, but I knew that the Marine Corps was the most difficult and within it, Reconnaissance was the most demanding. I also knew that the harder the job the more rewarding it would be, my desire to seek the toughest challenges always paid off in the end. With the work ethic my parents instilled in me, I knew I would succeed. In my 24-year Marines Corps career as a Recon Marine, I have had the opportunity to learn, lead, and teach Marines of various caliber and rank. As a senior Staff Non-Commissioned Officer my days of performing at the team level are behind me, but I am always learning. I now rely on the young professionals I work with to teach me the latest technical and tactical procedures; this further allows me to establish confidence with our senior Commanders. My introduction to the highly educated Marine Officers in the Amphibious Reconnaissance profession has been an eye opening experience. By working with them on a daily basis, these extremely smart and academically proficient professional men and women have shown me that I too have what it takes to achieve success at an institution of higher learning. My experiences teaching and mentoring young Marines, my work developing a non-profit organization targeted at providing financial and moral support to veterans during their most critically vulnerable point:
The Marine's take you as an individual, break you down to nothing, and throw you in with others who are at the same level. Thus making your "Tribe" and through out the training cycle Loyalty to your platoon, drill instructors, and Corps are beaten and instilled in you. Discipline which you must show and demonstrate on a daily basis in order to complete and accomplish the mission or task that is given to you. Honor is the binding value that is created whith the practice and application of discipline, and loyalty. Almost identical to the corps values one can see why the Marine Corps is so profeicient at what they do because of their ethos or, more importanlty, their demonstration and commitment to the Warrior Ethos. The Marine Corps are not the only ones who have a strong warrior ethos, there are many others. The Greek states with the Spartans, Macedonians, and the Athenians. Each one, very different to the other, but, their warrior ethos is there just the same. Along with everything there is always an opposite or evil. This is also evident with the warrior ethos. Those whose deeds, tho may be fitting in there eyes as keeping their honor and loyalty to there tribe, but, in reality, they are what can be called the darkside of
The United States Marine Corps plays a vital role in most wars and uses their strategies to ensure victory. Mox said, “Oh, wow! That this is real; it’s not a game. And we’re gonna have to watch out back sides and take care of everybody. After you’d been there awhile, there was many times. At least there was a sense that it was the enemy. If one of your own guys got hit – and that was the sad part about it. I liked the way the Marine Corps did the training, because it was more of a close knit team. But when somebody got hurt or killed, you knew them. ” (Mox). Mox joined the Marines because of his cousin, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor. He wanted to have the same experiences, that had been talked highly about to him for years. While
“You learn something in every war,” says Penn. While stationed in Vietnam, Penn and his fellow marines learned they were greatly underprepared.
The United States Marine Corps has an illustrious history forged in the trials of combat. Throughout its history, irregular warfare has and will continue to pose challenges for Marines facing new and radical enemy forces. The rapid, opportunistic, and flexible capabilities of maneuver warfare enables Marines to combat ambiguous enemies whose warfighting capability and doctrine is based on irregular warfare principles. Marine Corps units are organized and equipped to facilitate rapid deployment and to maximize the potential of each asset available to the Marine Air Ground Task Force Commanders. Conventional warfare follows the single battle concept, where two or more well defined forces using weapons that target the opposing force. The contiguous battle-space is well defined with a deep, close and rear area allowing the force commander to array forces that can be visually displayed in a linear graphic. This does not hold true in an unconventional warfare, where the rear area may also be the close and deep fight and forces may target the civilian population either through direct, indirect or propaganda attacks. The will of the people play an important part in unconventional warfare and their support to either force is equally important. The Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), the Marine Corps force in readiness is capable
Thorough the course of Naval history from its violent but humble beginnings in the revolutionary war era, to the now “modern age” Navy we know today, three major core values have developed and made their way as a staple in the teachings of each and every sailor: Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These Core Values, instilled from the beginning of our career in boot camp, are the three guiding qualities that every sailor strives to impersonate in their everyday life, and it is these principles that we rely on to lead the way. In this paper we will take a look into the importance of following orders, the necessity of personal
When we were younger we were always told by our parents to behave and follow the rules in school and to be nice to the other children. At school they had a set of rules that we were meant to follow and abide by them. Here in the Marine Corps is no different there are many rules and regulations that are meant to be followed under the UCMJ Articles. It’s important to keep following the orders you are given and that you follow these rules exactly like you are ordered to do so.
