The concept that I found most important in Module 3 Self-Improvement Through Feedback is Effective Interpersonal Skills found within the Interpersonal Communication chapter. Specifically, the concept of Impact of Effective Interpersonal Skills which began on page 238 of our reading. It is my belief this concept is most important because of its direct correlation to what makes an effective working group. In other words a team cannot be its strongest or perform to their highest potential without connecting and exchanging information and ideas. As a result the team will benefit from effective interpersonal communication. Having effective communication is the cornerstone of any successful working group. Interpersonal communication is open to interpretation and can be defined in different ways. According to our reading EPME defined interpersonal communication like this, “Interpersonal communication is a face-to-face, multidirectional exchange of verbal messages and nonverbal signals between two or more people, for the purpose of gaining a shared meaning.” One reason why I gravitated to this topic for discussion is that I have personally experienced firsthand and witnessed how lack of effective communication can be detrimental to an otherwise competent working group. I will pay close attention for non-verbal cues and work on my active and reflective listening. I will be thoughtful with how I convey my ideas and intentions to my subordinates. I learned from my studies that by doing this it will help my subordinates gain trust in me. I know that they are impressionable and look up to me for guidance. I will give constructive feedback to my co-workers and request feedback from my superiors and subordinates
Feedback is an essential part of evaluating your performance. Colleagues are able to identify strengths of your work and also improvements on weaknesses. Feedback helps you to identify areas for improvement (such as skills to develop, learning resources, behaviour management strategies etc.). In addition it can help you become more aware of your own practice and identify problems before they arise to encourage change within future experience. By encouraging feedback an honest appraisal helps you to develop professionally. By asking for specific examples provides clarity for future development. Feedback can be gathered from colleagues as said during TA School drop ins (see appendix) and management in individual meetings and group discussions,
Interpersonal communication involves the relationship between two people and how they communicate with one another. There are many different types of relationships that people have with others. Each different type of relationship requires different types of communication. Not every relationship is the same and the way people communicate with one another is a very important aspect of how the relationship works. Interpersonal communication is impacted by emotions and at times these emotions can cause obstacles within relationships. Another important aspect of a relationship is one’s cultural beliefs.
To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that “interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable” due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person’s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships.
Therefore, interpersonal skills with communication can help me be more successful as a manager and improve my working relationships with staff and partner agencies. The way I communicate with other people improves confidence, enhances my relationships with others thereby improving my effectiveness in the workplace.
Interpersonal communication is a multidimensional relational vehicle used to promote shared understanding, build community engagement, problem solve collectively, influence decision making, and develop a realization of self-awareness. It is a fundamental element deeply embedded in the social construct of our existence and is defined as part of the interactive process by which information, feelings and thoughts are exchanged between individuals. This exchange of information is inescapable as we are constantly involved in transmitting and interpreting verbal and non-verbal cues between each other simultaneously every day. Even in our perceived exhibition of momentary objective silence, we are still communicating through non-verbal expressions.
