The world has seen a number of leaders that show themselves throughout the course of history Martin Luther king with The civil rights movement, and George Washington and the fight for the independence of America, these are ample reminder that with every endeavor that humans take on, leaders will emerge. Each one of those leaders had a vision of equality, and they were willing to do everything possible to reach that goal. One of these leaders was Nelson Mandela with his peaceful fight for civil rights in South Africa. Nelson Mandela was a man who was true to his word and dedicated to equality and peace. The fact that he was president isn’t what makes him stand out, but the fact that he effectively executed many leadership qualities, this …show more content…
In being so humble and giving, he allowed others to also emerge as leaders. The perfect example would be Francois Pienaar, the captain of the rugby team during Nelson Mandela’s presidency. By motivating Francois and showing that Africa completely supported him and the team, essentially Nelson Mandela led him to their victory and their win of the 1995 World Cup. Nelson Mandela made sure to let the people know that they were the key to the success of Africa. He supported the decisions of others and made everyone feel as if they had a contribution to his leadership. From his protection force who could truly call him a friend to his personal assistant who cared for him as much more than just a leader. Basically, Nelson Mandela enabled others to act by being accepting of everyone around him and ensuring that everyone felt as family rather than just …show more content…
Mandela is best known for serving twenty-seven years in prison as a protest against the South African government’s racial segregation. Most people either count down to the day they are released from prison, not Mandela. While in prison he continued his schooling continued his life works. He organized hunger and work strikes to try to improve the living conditions of the prison. Prison authorities discovered Mandela studying and his study privileges were taken for four years. Although Mandela experienced unfair conditions while in prison he continued to improve the world he was living
Nelson Mandela made a life of empowering others is the hallmark of a servant leader. Mandela promoted and encourage personal and professional growth in the people he led. When a leader sees these qualities emerge in her followers, she has become a successful servant leader. Being a servant leader requires you to continually server others by instilling them with qualities needed to reach the next level.
In the movie when Mandela’s daughter came to visit him, she criticized him on the work he was trying to do as President. His daughter did not understand why he wanted to unite with the white people of the country who were the people who imprisoned him. Instead of trying to change himself and his ways to fit what his daughter wanted, Mandela stood his ground and held his beliefs and simply replied to his daughter “you criticize without understanding.” Mandela never tried to be something he was not and did not let what others had to say influence him and his decisions as a leader. Another example of Mandela being an authentic leader was when he attended the first Rugby game of the season. After he went out on the field and greeted all the players on both teams, he went up to the stands and greeted a few people with a smile. Even though the majority of the crowed as booing him, the main reason why he went up to the stands was to thank one particular fan for representing the new flag of South Africa. Of course at this time Mandela knew that going up into the stands was a very risky act because a lot of people were not happy with him as President. It is obvious that Mandela did not change himself or his kind actions just because of the circumstances. One last key value of being an authentic leader is that the strength of the leader is derived from their past experiences. When Mandela invited François, the
Throughout the years you may have heard of many influential black people who have either changed the past or have influenced an event that lead to a change. Many people including Rosa parks, a civil rights activist, Martin Luther king, the leader of the civil rights movement, and many more are are valid people who have influenced many people lives however in my opinion I think Nelson Mandela have been the top out of all these influential people to have changed millions of lives not only in the country he lived but the world itself. “In my country we go to prison first and then become President.” In 1991, Nelson Mandela was elected the president of the African National Congress. After President F.W. de Klerk released him from jail, Mandela continued to negotiate the country’s first non-racial elections for him. It began on December 21, 1991 at the World Trade Centre in Johannesburg. White South Africans were willing to share power but many black South Africans wanted a complete transfer of power as whites had before. These negotiations were tense and violence across South African townships erupted followed by the assassination of ANC and South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani on April 10, 1993. In 1993, Mandela and President de Klerk were awarded the Nobel
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandala, activist, politician, philanthropist and lawyer has affected the entire world with his anti-apartheid movement. A movement that worked to end racism in. But in specific he had his impact on South Africa, when he became the first black president of South Africa in 1994 and led his anti-apartheid movement to support the non-white citizens of South Africa. He stood up for the black people in South Africa so they could have equal rights like everybody else. Because of apartheid the non-white people had no rights or freedoms compared to the white people, but Mandela worked to end apartheid. A lot of the non-whites along with the whites of South Africa have immense respect for Mandela as he worked for
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy” (Martin Luther King Jr). In the quote MLK states that what defines is not what you do in times of struggle. Luther used his power to change the lives of thousands for people, creating segregation laws. A long side Luther, Nelson Mandela worked hard to create majority rule in South America. Nelson Mandela was a anti-apartheid and philanthropist, who later became South Americas first Black President from 1994 to 1999. Mandela worked hard to change the minority rule in Africa for the people. From 1994 until June 1999, President Mandela worked to bring about the transition from minority rule and apartheid to black majority rule. Mandela used his power to change people's lives in a positive way. He was able to change minority rule and apartheid to
There were many events that inspired Mandela to become even more politically involved. One of them was when 70,000 african miners along the reef went on strike. This showed Mandela that there is power within the black population of South Africa and that they really could make a difference. Another was when the Asiatic Land Tenure Act was put into place which made it much harder for colored people to buy land. There was also an event in xxxxxxx where 69 peacefull protesters where shot and killed. At this point, Mandela vowed that he would fight against the oppression of colored people. Mandela also married Evelyn Mase, a South African
Nelson Mandela was a man who learned from his previously violent ways and thoroughly used peace to his advantage in his fight against apartheid, and in the leading of South Africa. Nelson Mandela grew up as a peaceful person and in 1943 went to law school for his degree. While in law school, he got very interested in politics and joined a radical protest group, the African National Congress (The ANC). The ANC got into a lot of trouble with the government for their ideas about a place without apartheid. Mandela was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to life in prison. The government let him out of
Nelson Mandela devoted his life advocating for human rights. He served 27 years in prison but thrived following his release. Mandela became the first black president of South Africa and proceeded to inspire thousands with his speeches. During this time South Africa faced the challenges of overcoming the legacy of the Apartheid. Inequality, racism, and poverty would have to end in order for the country to prevail. He made people realize, “Dealing with these challenges also means accepting the facts of our history” (Mandela 3). Mandela faced the problems within his society head-on. In addition to this, he was willing to accept the country's flaws and the country was far from reaching its fullest potential. He was able to help his country gain a safe water
How far has the importance of Nelson Mandela in the ending of apartheid been exaggerated?
As stated, United States deemed Mandela as a terrorist and refused him entry (Nelson Mandela
It is important to be humble in this cruel world. Mandela really demonstrated this with the amount of support he showed for the other options in the real world. He was open to new ideas due to the lack of freedom he had to witness most of his life. This was very notable in his quote that stated, “But I shall neither impose my own customs on others nor follow any practice which will offend my comrades, especially now that freedom has become so costly” (Mandela 26). With the amount of racism and new freedoms that our country has been exposed to in our modern world, we need more people trying their best to make a difference in the world. It's amazing the problem of ignorance that exists in the American mind can't be diminished easily unlike Mandalas mind. This view he had is the same view I have and it really inspires to try and convince others around.
