One of the many controversies in today’s society and politics is putting a ban on assault weapons. Putting a ban on assault weapons will not reduce crime. There are many other weapons people could use for crime. The banning assault weapons would not stop the number of homicides or suicides either. The United States’ gun laws are nothing like other countries who’ve reduced crime in their nation. Other countries like Germany and the U.K. have developed successful laws and bans. The ban on assault weapons would not reduce crime, so U.S. citizens need a different approach at a ban. The ban’s real purpose is to make the public feel more safe. The Washington Post says “Its only real justification is not to reduce crime but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation.” The withholding of handguns cannot happen unless people yield certain types of weapons to change mentality. On the other hand, weapons like some semiautomatics got left off of the ban. This means that people could get their hands on military-style guns and also mass shootings …show more content…
When the ban expired, the crime rate rose to twenty percent. However, that does not mean that the rate of homicides and suicides will decrease. The ban would make it harder for military-style weapons to be purchased, but handguns that fire dozens of rounds per minute were not written in the ban. Vox states that “the data shows the guns that kill the most in this country aren’t the big, scary-looking ones. They’re handguns.” There have been huge death tolls because of handguns. Vox concludes that “Modern handguns also have the lethal ability to fire multiple bullets in quick succession — and just because they look less ominous doesn't mean we should treat them as any less dangerous.” Since the ban overlooks handguns, the number of homicides and suicides would only
Since 2013 there have been 268 school shootings in the United States alone (Everytown for Gun Safety, 2017). School gun violence is becoming increasingly probable. It is imperative that our government and our citizens come together to create a solution and implement a plan to prevent and stop the occurrence of school gun violence. The solution, for some, is to bring more guns into the picture by arming teachers, principals, and other school officials, or place armed police officers at school sites (LaPierre, 2015). For others, the solution is to make even stricter laws regarding gun use or to get rid of these weapons altogether. These certainly are drastic options; I must say that I do believe the true solution is to increase the focus on mental health services and by extension, mental health awareness. There is simply not enough focus on the mental health of our youth and of our students. Mental health services are the most important step to making schools safer, because this solution touches the entire problem of violence at its root level.
There are many views about gun control especially about assault weapons. People are both for it and against it. The people who are for the ban believes the weapons can only be used for violence. They don’t want to recognize that people against the ban have several different reasons to own their guns. These reasons can vary; some people just want protection; others want to use their guns for sport. This pleasurable pastime will also provide a variety of food to supplement family grocery supplies and to help people save on food costs. Instead of making more gun control laws the ones we have should be enforced.
An evolving and highly debated problem that continues to grow in our society, is the gun control epidemic. Gun violence in America is a national epidemic. Many people carelessly take advantage of Gun use and manipulate the tool without much thought to any repercussions. Many lives have been loss due to people legally or illegally obtaining guns and taking matters upon themselves to be executioners in holding other people's lives in their hands. Specifically, ongoing gun violence in schools have become a horrific catastrophe. It is putting student lives at risk, in a place that is supposed to facilitate a certain level of safety for the students. According to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, there was 558 gun incidents in schools
Do you feel Gun violence has taken a bad effect on taxpayers? I do, because even if your family member hasn’t been shot or killed, it still hurt you in a way. When a person has been killed in a certain state, and the killer is a part of that state. The state happens to give away four Thousand dollars to help cover the funeral costs. If you didn’t know, that’s coming from our taxes. When a person have been shot and wounded, your taxes are being taking and helping paying for medication to keep that person out of pain. Even when the killer gets caught, your taxes will be still be a risk, because killers has to eat too.
Assault weapons are the newest and the most popular type of firearm. When most people hear the term ‘assault weapon’, they think of an unnecessary weapon and their connections to mass shootings. That type of thinking is necessary when it comes to these types of weapons, and too many those disagree with people who think this way. There arguments are, “This is America,” and “It’s guaranteed in the second amendment,” but the issue is assault weapons have no place in American society outside the military and police use. The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This sentence written by our forefathers says nothing about which weapons are allowed in this country. So it is up to our government to decide which guns are legal and which guns are illegal. From a logical and educated perspective all assault weapons should be banned from public distribution and possession, and be restricted to use by our police and armed forces. This can easily be proven by why the 1994 gun ban was not successful, assault weapon capabilities in the hands of citizens, and solutions to assault weapon control.
A very controversial topic throughout the United States and the world is guns. As American citizens, we have a constitutional right to own a fire arm. But why is a gun so important and why is it such a huge part of the United States division of its people? The division starts with people using this Second Amendment to harm people. In recent years, mass shootings have become the norm for the United States and that outcome is not the purpose of the Second Amendment. These mass shooting happen everywhere from movie theatres to concert halls. But the majority of these mass shootings seem to happen at schools with innocent children aging from kindergarten to high school students. With the deaths of children in school rising, the urge to find a solution and develop prevention tactics have become top priority. Not only limiting the access to guns but finding out the reason behind the shootings will help aid in the fight to stop gun violence in schools.
If there was some type of ban on assault weapons, many lives could be saved. Assault weapons are becoming very attractive to criminals because of their capacity, “an assault weapon is generally considered to be a semiautomatic weapon with a detachable ammunition magazine and some type of advanced feature typically used in military-grade weapons.”(Assault Weapons) For example, most military-style weapons have high capacity of ammunition, meaning they can kill a lot of people in a very short time. Implementing
Gun control has been a long debate to determine if it’s better to have stricter access to firearms. America is one of the few countries that has gun rights embedded in their constitution. But what makes the US exceptional is that it has the right to keep and bear arms, other countries do not provide the right to have access to them, but rather, the government is allowed to regulate its use. The right to bear arms has also been the cause of growing violence and crime, at least according to anti-gun lobbyists. Citizens should be aware the dangers and harm that guns present to society. Controlling the sale of firearms can greatly decrease the number of violent crimes.
Banned assault weapon is not the way to slow the crime rate down, What it going to do is keep the gun in the hand of people that are going to harm someone and keep them out of the hand of people that are going to use them for hunting purposes. I say this because bad people will alway be able to get there hands on them.
In the U.S. alone there are over 300,000,000 guns, that’s the highest gun ownership in the world, but the U.S. sits at 28th in gun murders. There are 35,000 deaths from guns on average, 24,000 of those are suicides, that mean 11,000 people are killed a year because of gun violence. 1.2 million lives are saved a year because of guns. Studies have shown that when gun ownership went up more than 50%, gun crime decreased to about half of what it was before. The assault rifle ban won’t do much when, 80% of mass shootings are committed with handguns. “Assault weapons” are not machine guns, they are no more powerful than any other
Due to assault weapons about 10,000 people die per year. The use of guns is making individuals afraid to walk outside their own homes. Assault weapons are making self-defense less likely to occur due to the quickness of a weapons’ fire rate. Therefore, many people believe that assaults should be banned, but there are people that believe assault are useful. The world has a vast variety of weapons for many different purposes, thus making bans on certain firearms in attempt to reduce crime are totally useless. Therefore, why should there be bans on assault weapons? Placing bans on assault weapons would only force people to use other weapons, would take away humans self-defense, and would not lower the crime rate.
Should the people of America be allowed to carry a concealed handgun if they have passed a legitimate and complex background check? This is a widely controversial topic that has been talked about and brought up in many conversations. What is the right answer? You can look at it from both sides and have a legitimate argument no matter which you agree with. So what is your stance? To me no matter what the excuse is, no person should be able to carry a concealed weapon. I believe that whatever the circumstance may be, no one person should be able to carry a concealed weapon no matter if they have passed a background check or not to ensure the safety of those around.
As we all know gun violence has become an increasingly conflicted issue in the world and specifically in the United States. Gun violence is the leading cause of premature death in the United States as it kills almost 30,000 people and causes about 60,000 injuries annually. But guns are not the main cause of this problem. The problem is America's culture of violence. We need to understand that guns are not what’s killing people, people are what’s killing people. Although guns may enable killers to commit an act of violence more easily and effectively, stricter laws on guns would not necessarily dismantle the problem. Currently, guns are just a symptom to the real problem, which is our violent human nature. For decades, we have been dousing
Guns should be kept out of the hands of criminals who use them for the wrong reasons. This is where the real issue lies. In 2001, 59% of all homicides in LA and 53% in Chicago were gang related (Geer). This is an alarming statistic showing that majority of the murders are committed by gang members and criminals. They are already partaking in criminal activities so a ban on firearms would not even affect them. They do not carry legal weapons already so a new law enforcing a ban on at least handguns would not faze them. Criminals would still carry on with their normal activities. In 2004, among state prison inmates who possessed a gun at the time of offense, less than 2% obtained their firearm illegally (Alters). There needs to be a better system in place that can keep guns out of the hands of felons who intend to do harm with a
Some people believe that extremely tight gun control laws will eliminate crime, but gun control laws only prevent the 'good guys' from obtaining firearms. Criminals will always have ways of getting weapons, whether it be from the black market, cross borders, or illegal street sales. New gun control laws will not stop them. Since the shootings of Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook, the frequency of mass shootings has increased greatly. Gun control is not effective as it has not been shown to actually reduce the number of gun-related crimes. Instead of considering a ban of private firearm possession, and violating individual ownership rights, it may be more practical to consider the option of partially restricting firearm
