Social media allow people to communicate with friends using online communication, which has created and developed many relationships. Thesis: Stay in the present moment, don’t let yourself believe you’re going to forget a memory because you didn’t document it through social media.
A wide variety of people use social media and people see us as “always on our phones”. It is widely used throughout many generations. Professor Larry Rosen in Psychology Today explains how 70% of people in the last four generations have a Facebook account. Yet this study did not include our society, so this number is most likely greater now. But, as predicted, the same 2016 article tells us, “overall younger generations used more social media sites than older ones”. Teenagers can be seen being preoccupied on some type of technology. In a recent asking posted in the Huffington Post, modern American teens were asked about their social media. It showed that “90 percent of American teens say they use at least one social media site, and 71 percent of teens say they use at least two sites”. There are many different types of social media; social media as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “forms of electronic communication such as websites for social networking and microblogging through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. No matter what the reason, people use social media very often. The Pew Research Center tells us, “around seven-in-ten Americans use social media to connect with one another, engage with news content, share information and entertain themselves.” With an increase in popularity, even the older generations are catching on and joining media sites. The same source explains usage of these devices has increased 31% in people over the age of 65 over the last 11 years. Overall, we observe an extremely dramatic increase in usage for all age groups between the years of 2005 and 2016. Whether people like it or not, social
Sure social media makes promotion for events super easy as it expands your reach and its much easier (and cheaper) to promote more frequently. But if thats the only way youre using social media in relation to your event, keep reading because im gonna tell you ways to boost your event with social media that isn't purely promo.
In the beginning, there was Myspace; then there was Facebook; then there was Twitter; then there was Instagram; then there was Snapchat, and there will be many more. Social media has become so prevalent in society that we consider it strange when people do not have any social media accounts, and we choose to use said accounts to judge a person and their life. The average man or woman uses social media for entertainment, and some may use it to keep up with current events. But, primarily, social media is used for personal pleasure. Advertising companies use social media in an entirely different manner. Advertising companies, and their research teams, use social media to survey the users and their preferences, so they can “pop-up” appropriately. Do you feel like this invades your privacy? Good; because it does. Companies are able to scan through our search history and likes so quickly and efficiently because of that privacy agreement that nobody bothers to read. But, what if we could take this privacy invasion and reform it into something that could save thousands of Americans each year. If we allowed a service to monitor your search history in real time for depression and suicidal warning signs, would you let them? I would be willing to say that the family members of the 44,000 people who committed suicide last year would have wanted that if it would have saved their family members.
Posting on various social media outlets such as Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram are outlets that the recent generations are prone to using. Being able to post online about yourself and showing the world who you are is the new thing to do. This also comes along with pretending who you are online getting caught in an unrealistic fantasy world. Be able to get away from your real life and going to your online fantasy life is what everyone seems to be doing. Many of these people will hide the ugly truths about what is actually going on in their lives, trying to prove to the world that their lives and who they are are perfect. Doing so, no one really sees the dangerous side to how social media and technology has been affecting our everyday lives. Between editing a picture of yourself to make you look skinnier or to fix your acne to try and fish for compliments from others they don’t even know seems to be okay. Behind the scenes, social media has been an ongoing issue for teens for decades because of one major issue called cyberbullying.
History shows that BuzzFeed has consistently been popular across many of the most commonly-used social media platforms. In November of 2016, BuzzFeed’s Tasty (the popular cooking channel and one of BuzzFeed’s 4 main tabs on their homepage) partnered with RITZ Crackers to help increase store sales during the popular holiday shopping period. The videos featured Tasty’s unique aesthetic for step-by-step recipe videos, shot from above to show what someone would see when cooking. RITZ utilized Facebook’s advertising tools to reach a specific target audience (Facebook Business). According to Facebook Business the campaign achieved:
Most teenagers are very familiar with the old adage, “Back in my day, we didn’t even have phones!” which many of the older generations like to point out. It is no secret that while the older generations struggle to understand why today’s youth are so obsessed with their technology, teenagers struggle to convince them that change is necessary in order to grow as a society and that technology is the key to development. While both perceptions hold truth, the obsession with technology is something that could be a cause for concern. Why are young adults so technology crazed? The answer comes in the form of the newest trend: social media. Originally created for better communication, social media platforms have since evolved into much more. Now, social media has become a breeding ground for distractions, negative perceptions, cyberbullying, and online predation.
Internet started roughly about 30 years ago by the World Wide Web. However, the first social media came out circa 20 years ago. The name of it was Six Degrees and it was created by Andrew Weinreich in the 1900’s. Six degrees had the capabilities of uploading a profile, making friends, and sending messages with family and friends. Nevertheless on 2004, Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a 19-year-old who created the biggest social media that changed the world. Till this day, Facebook has reached up to 2 billion users and still counting. Nonetheless, most users are from their teens to mid-40s, that have the capability of spreading information across the globe setting a chain reaction that created and spread fake news. “Fake news is easily spread through social media to large numbers of people who are willing to believe and share the fictional material." (Brennen 169-172) According to Gretel, “In the midst of a “nationwide debate over the proliferation of fake news on social media sites – and, as one 2015 study by the Media Insight Project shows, at a time when nearly 9 in 10 Millennials regularly get news from Facebook – the numbers, at first glance, may point to a bleak, uninformed future.” Therefore, teens need to use social media to disintegrate some of the repercussions of news.
Sadly, these are not point-values in Scrabble. These are the average number of tweets posted on Twitter in a week containing these words. Of course, these are not the only vulgar remarks left on social media, nor are they the worst. With the growing population of people online, these numbers continue to grow. Social networks were created to increase the efficiency of communication, from anywhere in the world (that has internet of course); however, users have taken this and turned it into an opportunity to take any thought, no matter how ignorant, and display it to millions of people, all over the world.
In the emerging age of technology, it is difficult to ignore the immense advantage that the Internet has to offer. It is thus without a doubt that social media is beneficial to activism due to its ability to spread information faster than ever before, and to a larger audience. A social media campaign is a beneficial resource for attracting activists to a cause because it is a useful mean for mass communication; it propagates global support (Starbird & Palen, 2012), and allows for recruit of marginal group members (Postmes & Brunsting, 2002). Specifically, social media facilitates the communication and connectivity of leaders to the grass root members, emphasizes group unity, and readily motivates the involvement of otherwise apathetic individuals (Gladwell, 2014). Although the legitimacy of this new form of activism has been doubted (Gladwell, 2014; McCafferty, 2011), it is difficult to ignore the overwhelming benefits that social networking has to offer. The valuable impact of the Internet can no longer be overlooked; instead, it should be embraced and implemented to its full potential to ensure the success activism campaigns.
Do something quick, think back to the last time you were on your cellphone. I bet it wasn’t very long ago, now was it? We use our cell phones all the time and to do just about anything. That doesn’t mean we’re obsessed with our phones, right? Well, maybe it does. On our phones we find different apps. Some apps we use all the time, others we only use when we are bored. By the end we will map out who uses social media platforms, what being obsessed means, and how these sites affect us.
Social media has positively impacted young adults because it creates friendships. Danah Boyd, an author, principal researcher at Microsoft and the founder of Data & Society references the story of an interview with a sixteen year-old girl, Tara in her publication “It’s Complicated: the social lives of networked teens.” “Tara likes Facebook because it allows her to connect with her friends. Like many of her peers, Tara spends hours each work viewing her friends’ photos and updates, writing comments, and reading comments left by others” (Boyd). Communication is a crucial element in teenager’s social lives and the social networks can help maintain that. Essentially, Boyd focuses on the fact that one of the most burdening reasons teens use social media is to connect with friends. Social media can be interpreted in several different ways, but this reasoning is often overlooked. Staying connected with
Humans have a strong desire to connect with others and the most popular way of doing so is through social media. Social media has been around since the late 1990s and has risen in popularity due to its ability to allow individuals to communicate with others. Though social media allow communication between individuals, this aspect does not always have a positive outlook on it. This bright and thrilling experience has the potential to turn into a dangerous participation that should not be authorized, most notable kids due to them being the demographic who uses social media the most. Kids are known to perform certain actions that do not create a positive outcome. For social media to allow these types of actions, it will only evolve the platform into a dangerous environment that isn’t suitable for the youth. Due to this, kids should not have social media due to the activities that they could perform. These activities could potentially lead to negative results that can affect their lives.
Social media is often portrayed as a social handicap to the younger generations due to the lack of communication the face-to-face contact. Despite this belief, social media has created an alternative communication method which is rapidly depleting the physical contact in society. Teenagers are becoming more dependent on their ability to hide behind a computer screen and “socialize” rather than sharing physical contact with their peers. Although social media has created a social handicap in physical contact, it has also created the ability to communicate with people across the world and promote positivity on notable issues. Media has even become a pivotal role in political campaigns in recent years. Social media has become a crucial role in society’s interactions.
There is currently talk of the potentiality for the use of social media in the classroom. Snapchat is at the forefront of this debate and the question of its use in the classroom environment is turning heads amongst the laymen and educators alike. Snapchat is a phone app that allows users to take pictures and videos that last for ten seconds at a time and then is deleted forever. This app is extremely popular with teenagers and young adults, encouraging educators to pose the question of whether it can be used in a pedagogical context. There is debate as to whether or not any form of social media can be successfully incorporated into the classroom environment without it causing distractions and problems for the administration. As with any technology being newly integrated into the classroom, there are some outstanding pros and cons to Snapchat’s ability to aid the foreign language classroom.
