The bell rings. Students walk to art class where they are told not to drop the rulers on the floor. One student accidentally drops the ruler, hoping the teacher will not notice, fearing he will be beaten. However, the teacher sees it and paddles the student five times. The student now has severe bruising on his bottom just for dropping a ruler. This is not how it should be. Thirty-nine states have banned corporal punishment because it is dangerous in schools and not a suitable punishment for students(Morin). Corporal Punishment should not be allowed in schools because it promotes violence, it creates an unsafe environment, and it has a lasting impact on kids. Corporal punishment should not be allowed in schools because it promotes violence. Many students have been beaten by their teachers for doing something negative in school, and have gotten the message that violence is a good thing. The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated some examples of this in the article “Should Corporal Punishment Be Used in K-12 Schools”.They explained that “Children who experience corporal punishment are more likely to hit or use violence against people to get their way.” (Procon.com) This example shows that schools that use corporal punishment, teach that it is ok to use violence to get what students want. Students who see or experience corporal punishment get the message that violence is necessary to get their way. In other words, when those kids are out in the real world, they can not
Reason number one supporters give is, some think it helps your child to understand your rules and by showing them what will happen if it is done. In the article by "Corporal Punishments" it states that "parents have every right to discipline their child that way, since it is perhaps the best way to teach children the difference between right and wrong." Pain is probably the most effective form of discipline." This evidence suggests that you have every right to do this to your child since it is your form of discipline that works for you. Another reason supporters give is that, parents believe that this help to get your child to listen to you. For example, the article by "Corporal Punishments" it states "as long as parents themselves have the right to discipline their children physically a home, schools should be allowed to continue using corporal punishments as well." This passage suggests that by having your child's teacher hit or threaten the child it will get them to get their work done and not disrespect the rules. Another reason supporters use is, by hitting and saying things, they'll become scared of you and won't do anything they aren't supposed to do. Evidence from the article by "Corporal Punishments" it states "For a child to develop soundly, it is important to maintain the same punishments in both locations. If not, the child might get confused about what he or she can get
The most misbehaved students. In John C. Calhoun Elementary is was proven that corporal punishment helped behave the most misbehaves students. This leads me to believe that it { Corporal Punishment }should be allowed. I think it should be allowed because it teaches kids to be respectful, teaches them to behave better, and it is a more effective discipline.
Corporal Punishment helps kids learn better because it is a quick punishment that you can get over fast so you can go back to class. It’s better than other punishments such as suspension, because if you get suspended you “miss school and you also miss instructions”(source B ) and you can not do your work.
Again, theses are only half of the reason why corporal punishment should not be allowed in any of the countries, and according to the latest reports nation's largest school districts among them Houston and Dallas,Texas; Memphis,Tennessee; Atlanta,Georgia; and Mobile County,Alabama have banned the practice of corporal punishment. Would you want your children to be an excuse for teachers to show their anger? Would you want them to be spending their childhood in fear? So stand with me to ban corporal punishment once and for all,for the sake of our growing generation. Abolishing corporal punishment in schools by Government is not
It could even teach them a lesson. But there is no positive outcomes that come from spanking. Spanking your children leads to depression, bad behavior, and it doesn’t improve their behavior; therefore you should not spank your kids.
Is corporal punishment wrong or is it a vital tool for disciplining our children which without our society will ultimately continue to degrade its self and cause our fore fathers to roll over in their graves? Corporal punishment with in reason is not abuse and should be considered a vital tool that is not out dated and should be used widely and constantly through out the previous and upcoming generations of man kind. Today with the mostly discontinued use of corporal punishment and generic discipline our children are becoming less disciplined, more disrespectful, and growing in their “boldness.”
Spanking a four-year old causing trouble leads to more trouble so why hit him, it only causes them to act up, but alternatives to spanking can be used upon a child to get them to behave. “The right of parents to physically discipline their children is ingrained in American culture and recognized in our laws” (Blum 921), but a toddler doesn’t need harsh physical discipline to learn the difference between right and wrong, it doesn’t need to be spanked because they are doing something they are not supposed to be doing, it just needs to be told that what they are doing is wrong and they should stop. After a while the child knows not to do certain things because they know they shouldn't do them. One very good example of an alternative to spanking is putting the child in time-out. Let’s say the child is misbehaving a lot, yelling across the room or throwing a tantrum because you didn’t want to buy them a toy they wanted, and he or she doesn’t want to listen to anything you are saying, giving the child a warning allows them to consider where their parents are coming from, but if they ignore it putting them in time out gives the child some time to reflect on what they did wrong. This works very well with young children because they have a fear of being by themselves. Some “ Mexican” parents tell their kids that once they get home they will get a spanking because they were misbehaving, but this puts the child in a state of anxiety, no child wants to get home from a long day and get
Many states have banned educators’ use of corporal punishment either by law or state regulation. In 1971, only one state prohibited corporal punishment; as of 2017, twenty-eight states and D.C. proscribed its use. Generally, when state law and school board policy permit corporal punishment, courts have upheld its reasonable administration and have placed the burden on the aggrieved students to prove otherwise. In evaluating the reasonableness of a teacher’s actions in administering corporal punishment, courts have assessed the child’s age, maturity, and past behavior; the nature of the offense; the instrument used; any evidence of lasting harm to the child; and the motivation of the person inflicting the
In this web page it explains the good and bad of corporal punishment. Many believe punishing a child as an inhuman form of trying to get obedience and, many view it as a way to get their children to lean. Here are some some reason why corporal punishment should be reinstated. They have statistics that shows that without the need of punishment that the crime rate would increase. It shows that between 1981 to 1997, when corporal punishment was legal the crime rate was lower than now that it has been now, with a 67%
Punishment, the word has brought fear to men and children alike, leaning towards adult offenders it tends to take on deeper connotations. As a child you would be punished by your parents, school leaders and other parental figures, and mostly under not so serious circumstances, usually requiring very little corporal punishment and/or separation from entertainment devices. As we get older the offenses tend to be greater and therefore demand greater punishment, despite having histories involving death sentences and hard labor, some methods have done little to deter some offenders. The question this raises of course, should we focus more on punishment or on rehabilitation, concentrating on punishment some would say stricter… while many will
The question of whether corporal punishment is an effective method of discipline is greatly debated. Corporal Punishment is a form of physical discipline that may cause pain for wrongdoing, or to bring for change in ones attitude which may seem disrespectful. Corporal punishment should not be allowed in my opinion because to what extent is this type of punishment considered abuse, it could traumatize children and it may cause the child to grow up thinking that violence and love is ok.
Corporal punishment is the use of physical discipline to make a child behave (Knox & Schacht, 2015). There are different methods of corporal punishment such as spanking, hitting, and much more. Although corporal punishment is used commonly by American families, it is not the best form of discipline. Therefore, corporal punishment should be against the law, for it can negatively affect the child’s mental state, can lead to more physical violence, and alternative forms of discipline lead to better results.
However, I believed that corporal punishment is a cruel and inhumane behavior. Corporal punishment can lower self-esteem to both the punisher and punishee, and may have longer term psychological impact too. Also, there are other means of education that are effective too. A common alternative is to educate why the action was wrong to the point of invoking empathy or shame. Moreover, those people receiving punishment are more like to be instilled with rage and hostility even into adulthood. Corporal punishment trains children to be violent to other children and educates them that it is an acceptable means of education. This will carry on into adulthood too. In addition, for corporal punishment to typically continue working, more punishment, pain, or force maybe be necessary. As a result, child abuse typically starts as corporal punishment. According to “Impairing Education,” a report done by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union in August 2009. Almost a quarter of a million children in the U.S. were subjected to corporal punishment in public schools between the 2006
Corporal punishment is wrong because it causes long-term negative effects on students. If a student receives a paddling as a punishment it could cause serious problems for that student mentally and physically. One example of this is in an article called Should Corporal Punishment Be Used in K-12 Schools?. It says “frequent use of corporal punishment leads to a higher risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, stress, and other mental health”. These would be dangerous for a child’s health. In serious cases this could even lead to suicidal thoughts. Not only can corporal punishment affect a child's mental health, it can also have an affect on their performance in school. Another example from an article says, “Students who experience corporal punishment in
I believe corporal punishment should not be allowed in schools at all. Some teachers may misuses the authority and use corporal punishment too much. Back in the day I think corporal punishment may have been appropriate, but I think now parents do not want other people touching their children. If they are going to use corporal punishment it should be in the administrative office with another adult present. As the children get older a corporal punishment is very pointless useless you use force. Also the should not be use corporal punishment for little petty things. A male teacher only use corporal punishment on the arm area of his female students and vice verse for female teachers. Another teacher should always be present in my opinion just to avoid any
