CHAPTER 3 – RESEARCH METHODS
3.1 Research Approach
There are two research approaches that researchers have to consider in conducting a research. Those are quantitative and qualitative research. While both approaches become standards for conducting a research, both approaches have major differences in answering research questions and gathering the valid data.
Quantitative research can be described as an approach to which it explains a phenomenon expressed in numerical data and analyzed by using mathematically-based statistical tools (Aliaga and Gunderson, 2000). As a conclusive research, quantitative research emphasizes what are the causes of the phenomenon, assuming people to have fixed factors to which it causes a phenomenon. Moreover, quantitative approach is more limited, emphasized only on measuring the quantity of phenomenon instead of describing it. Thus, quantitative research has less statistical tools compare to qualitative research. However, it has several advantages such as more time and cost saving.
Regarding to this research, the author decides to use quantitative research in conducting a research. The reason why the author chooses quantitative research is because this research is more emphasized on what considerations that people make in buying an automobile. In this research, the author will be gathering two forms of data. First being primary data which refers to form of data that is collected by the author itself. The primary data on this research refers to questionnaire which will be given to participants. On the other hand, secondary data refers to collection of data that has been collected by others. The secondary data refers to scientific literature such as books and journals in order to help the author to observe the problem on this
According to Yin (2003), there are two types of research approach. This includes quantitative research approach and qualitative research approach. A quantitative research emphasizes on transforming the data to numbers, quantities and statistics to formulate facts and to uncover patterns in a research. It addresses research purposes through empirical analysis that involve numerical measurement, the relationship between variables and analysis approaches (Zikmund et al., 2010). The sample size being investigated is typically large (Anderson, 2006). Quantitative research mainly uses questionnaires, surveys and other equipment to collect numerical or measurable data (Anderson, 2006). On the other hand, a qualitative research typically emphasizes words more than numbers
By contrast, the main purpose corresponded with qualitative research is to make understanding with regard to participants. Moreover, qualitative research has many different ways of collecting information, but the best ways of qualitative research is to approach the sources of information, it is due to make the deeper understanding of the issues (Easterby-Smith et al, 2002; Wood et al., 2010, p. 59). In addition, quantitative and qualitative both were also many researchers debated. For example, quantitative research is mostly experimental and qualitative research is mainly non-experimental (Leeds-Hurwitz, 1995, p.50), (see table 5). Researchers often times are faced with the decision of choosing a methodology of research; either Quantitative or Qualitative that they think best fits their study and objectives. This choice is guarded by the topic of study, the advantages and disadvantages, and the strengths and weaknesses of using either one or the other type of the methodologies.
Qualitative research methods have the options of using different methods to gather data on complex subjects, compare to quantitative its provides the options of gathering more detailed information to explain phenomenon and complex issues, and it is cost efficient (Creswell, 2015).

Moreover, the quantitative method is used by researches who want to discover statistics and facts by analyzing data in a numerical way. Unlike this article, the qualitative method is used by researches who want to gather data through observations and interviews based on what the participants say or do. The qualitative method seeks to explore and collect opinions and motivations on the research topic instead of collecting numerical data.
Quantitative research involves collecting data, which can be expressed numerically. The design is well structured with pre-determined outcomes. It frequently involves testing a hypothesis, which then can be analysed from the data deductively using statistical methods. Using numerical data is easier to analysis mathematical, so larger sample sizes can be utilised compared to qualitative research, therefore giving a better representative of the population; along with simplifying the process of making a generalisation. Another advantage is that studies can easily compare to similar findings (Kruger, 2003). The disadvantages are the results are limited and might not provide a proper understanding of the topic. Also, statistics and leading questions can be used to give a false representation of the data when summarising.
Based on the research question and the developed hypothesis, the research will utilize the quantitative approach. The ultimate goal of quantitative study is to find generalization on large number of case based on different variables or to examine the causal phenomenon of numerical variables (King, Keohane and Verba, 1994). The regression analysis will be used throughout the study, it is not sophisticated but it is still powerful in the social science.
