As one of the first plays I have ever experienced at the Lied Center and in the thrust stage style Abigail/1702 was a unique experience. On October 8th, a Sunday, I went and saw this theater production. The play was produced by the Nebraska Repertory Theatre and directed by Andy Park. It was originally written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa under the premise of what could have happened to Abigail from The Crucible. Overall I thought the play had a unique perspective on what it is like to live with guilt and what it takes to forgive yourself. I think it also added dimension to why certain things took place in The Crucible and how it affected those involved. The titular actress of the young woman, Abbey Siegworth, gave a complex performance of a woman clearly torn apart by her past. What struck me the most about it was how she made every movement seem natural and believable. In one of the beginning scenes, she stands on a stump and pretends to fly. The movements felt organic with the words and feelings she was conveying. Her facial expressions were one of the things I noticed about her. When I could clearly see her face, I knew the emotions she felt and they seemed familiar. Almost as if I was walking down the street and saw someone on the phone clearly upset. An example of her facial expressions and movements working well together would be the scene where John was trying to get her to admit her feelings for him. It was a lighthearted scene, and she played the
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a rich and enticing play set in the late 1600’s describing the epic horrors and emotions through the events of the Salem witch trials. The Crucible, focuses primarily on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. The play begins with the discovery of several young girls and an African American slave, Tituba, in the woods just outside of Salem, dancing and pretending to conjure spirits. The Puritans of Salem stood for complete religious intolerance and stressed the need to follow the ways of the bible literally without exception. The actions of the women in
Hook: Crucible is a book filled with mistakes and the outcomes of those mistakes. Every single action that a person commits leads to either a positive or a negative consequence, and this piece of literature provides readers with an opportunity to analyze some causes and effects.
Thesis Statement: Arthur Miller conveys of the theme of jealousy by how it can ruin lives by abigail was jealous of elizabeth proctor Also John Putnam is moved by jealousy by he is jealous of others people's property.
There’s has been people who either have been manipulated and then there’s people that have manipulated people. Being experienced with situation can make it easy for one to manipulate anyone. For example in “The Crucible” it demonstrates how one young child can manipulate everyone from children to an adult into believing her vengeance story. With the right situation experience one can manipulate with ease, but it shouldn’t be easy for one to manipulate half of the people in the town.
In 1952 a play was written by Arthur Miller, about events that happened in Salem in 1692. The play was about affairs, accusations, and innocent people being accused of witches. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail and Mary Warren are introduced as two separate people. Although people might see Abigail and Mary Warren as two separate people and nothing alike, they are more alike than meet's the eye. Abigail and Mary Warren have three things in common; they are both are deceitful, they both dishonest, and they are both apprehensive.
All eyes on them, some even with tears, and the three thick ropes with a noose on each end. They dangle there waiting… This was happening now, it was really happening. His heart was beating out of his chest and his palms were sweating, as he stepped up, step by step until death itself was palpable. As he looked out into the crowd, he felt the rope being placed around his neck, then as the rough rope got tighter he could feel the relief of his sins. He knew he was doing right by god, he was ready. As they said their prayer in unison, one by one the floor beneath them all was swept away and all that was left was the three bodies hanging silently.
The Crucible was a very emotional book in terms of plot. The plot was about a girl named Abigail who accuses many people of witchcraft. She also accuses Elizabeth Proctor, wife of John Proctor. Abigail uses her power of the court to get to her obsession, John Proctor, by trying to eliminate Elizabeth. She is unsuccessful in getting this done and ends up executing over twelve people including John Proctor. It is great to see all the different kinds of characterization and themes. This story really gets you thinking about many things, such as, lying and telling the truth, or most importantly, standing up for your beliefs even if you have to die for them. It also shows how envy, greed, hate, and jealousy can impact
If someone told you that your light in your room is flickering, because of witchcraft and not the simple fact that the light bulb is burnt out, would you believe them? Well in Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible they did if something out of the ordinary happened and couldn’t be explained they turned to witchcraft. People were being accused without any proof which leads us to the theme of this play that is to not believe false accusations or accusations that have no proof. The author, Arthur Miller is trying to convey in this story that the government can sometimes get too powerful over the people and rule the people in ways just to benefit themselves. In today’s world there is a lot of debates about whether or not
Thou shalt not lie, thou shalt not murder, and thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor are three of the ten commandments that God created for his people to follow. The Puritans valued the commandments and devoted their lives to following them. They supposedly believed in going to church every sunday, having their children baptized young, and living day by day in accordance with the scripture. The Puritans were thought to be holy and without fault, but no one is perfect; therefore, the Puritan society was bound to make a mistake. Instead of confessing and publicly stating that they were deviant, they chose to cover it up and hide. They claimed to be the innocent Christians that they were raised to be, but deep down, they were
People come and go, but fear remains constant. In 1692, the people of Salem were scared into believing there was witches among them, and in 1950’s the Red Scare destroyed thousands of people's lives by saying they were Communists. Those accused were both witch hunts were put on trial, and in Salem they were killed, and the Red Scare had blacklisted those persecuted. Theres many similarities in "The Great Fear” and a poem on Sacco and Vendetti, Margaret Chase Smith’s speech, and Senator Elizabeth Warren. The similarity are lives being over and the towns, the people who started the mess and, the people who spoke out.
Over 200 accused, and 19 hanged--that is the number of people that were wrongly accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials between 1692 and 1693. These numbers are extremely outmatched when compared to the Red Scare of 1951, but the circumstances were almost identical. In both instances, figures devoured the fear of the common people and began bringing it close to home. In 1692, the people of Salem feared sin and wrong-doing. When the first young girls showed any signs of acting different than what is considered normal for their puritan society, they were automatically accused of witchcraft.
In Arthur Miller book, “The Crucible” the government accused people of McCarthyism and during the red scare people were accused of communism. During the years of 1692-1693 people accused of witchcraft were hung by the jury with no remorse. The comparison between the two is that Arthur Miller wrote a play to compare to the Salem Witch Trials. Within The Red Scare if people were accused of being a communist then they would be blacklisted. When blacklisted you would lose your job and become pretty much an outcast.
In the end of Part I, Hanna’s mysterious departure shatters Michael emotionally. In order to cope, Michael immerses himself in the war trials for distraction and cultivates an air of arrogant superiority in embracing his generation’s passion to cast blame on the previous generation. Considering himself to be a radical explorer of the past, Michael believes it is his generation’s responsibility to redeem German society from its past by “open[ing] the windows and let[ting] in the air.” (91) However, Michael’s ease at condemning the first generation is both superficial and naive.
I was a dark person and anyone could tell you that. How do I know that everyone thinks that about me? Well I’m currently burning my classmates at my school in Salem and the whole town is watching it happen. You are probably wondering why nobody is trying to stop me, but I know magic. I used a spell to possess them into making them obey me and to not move at all. You are also probably wondering how I know magic so I’ll tell you. My ancestors were witches here in Salem, Massachusetts so I have inherited my family's evil witch traits. Turning back to the school after watching the community, I saw half my classmates were struggling to get out but the other half were now ashes.
