Why did the play Romeo and Juliet end in such tragedy and who is the one guilty for it? In my opinion, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet because he was trying to convey the message that not all relationships end well and that there is always tragedy in your life, no matter what you do, or how you try and stop it. Friar Laurence is most responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because Friar Laurence gave Juliet the potion and didn’t plan for any flaws in his and Juliet’s plan. The primary reason that Friar Laurence is to blame for the tragedy is because he chose to give juliet the “poison” and he let her take it. Initially, the Friar and Juliet were talking and she told Friar Laurence that she would rather die than marry Paris, all …show more content…
“(Friar John)Going to find a barefoot brother out, one of our order to associate me, here in this city visiting the sick, and finding him, the searchers of the town, suspecting that we both were in a house where the infectious pestilence did reign, sealed up the doors, and would not let us forth, so that my speed to Mantua there was stayed. (Friar Laurence) Who bare my letter, then, to Romeo?(Friar John) I could not send it-here it is again-not get a messenger to bring it thee, so fearful were they of infection. (Friar Laurence) Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice, but full of charge, of dear import, and the neglecting it may do much danger.” The importance of this is that because the letter wasn’t delivered Romeo was lead to believe that Juliet was dead, and wouldn’t be there when Juliet does wake up Romeo won’t be there like she was promised by the Friar. Also, the friar is to blame because, “Now must I to the monument alone. Within this three hours the fair Juliet wake. She will beshrew me much that Romeo hath had no notice of these accidents; but I will write again to Mantua, and keep her at my cell till Romeo come- poor living corse, closed in a dead man’s tomb!” This further proves why Friar Laurence is to blame because even though the Friar did try and fix his mistake and not accommodate …show more content…
Though this did not cause the tragedy because he had intervened many times when there were fights and took care of all those whom are to blame for starting and participating in the fights. To begin, after a fight that Benvolio had tried to break up the prince came in and said, “By thee, old Capulet, and Montague, have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets and made Verona’s ancient citizens cast by their grave beseeming ornaments to wield old partisans, in hands as old, cankered with peace, to part your cankered hate. If you ever disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace.” This is important because it shows that the prince has finally realised that feud is getting out of hand and has started to intervene and stop the fights the best he can by threatening their lives if they fight again. Another reason the Prince is to blame is, “ Immediately we do exile him hence. I have an interest in your hate’s proceeding, my blood for your rude brawls doth lie a-bleeding; but I’ll amerce you with so strong a fine that you shall all repent the loss of mine.” This is important because the Prince had lost a family member because of a fight between the two families and he was gonna make both the families pay but he didn’t kill Romeo but exiled him, primarily because he was friends with
Another reason that Friar Laurence can be blamed is because of his faulty plan to save Juliet from having to marry Paris. He was rushed into concocting this plan because Juliet was threatening to kill herself if she had to marry Paris. Juliet said, “Unless thou tell
Romeo and Juliet, a Shakespeare play written about two star crossed lovers. The forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet resulted in a great tragedy. There is one question that is asked now; who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Friar Laurence is to blame Romeo and Juliet’s death. The Friar had good intentions, but sometimes the right decision is not always the best.
A second reason the Friar should be held most responsible is the fact that he gave Juliet a remedy in order to “fake” her death. Friar Laurence tells Juliet:
Therefore, Friar Laurence is the most responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because he acts irresponsibly, doesn't realize the importance of the “letter”, and becomes self-conscious. Many blame Friar Laurence for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet due to his irresponsible decision making skills.
However, one of the characters who is most to blame could be Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence was the wise adviser to Romeo and Juliet. He kept their secret and helped them be together. He was the one who married the two, hoping that the marriage would cause an end to the feuding. He was the one who came up with the idea of giving Juliet the potion to
Friar Laurence’s character flaws greatly impacted the end result of the play. The Friar should be punished for his poorly made decisions throughout Shakespeare’s story. His first mistake was when he initially helped Romeo and Juliet with the aid of the Nurse. Both Romeo and Juliet are children and their parents should be included in every decision made for them. The Friar married Romeo and Juliet in Act 3 of the play. “Till Holy Church incorporate two in one” (3.1.37) The marriage was the start of many issues. Such as Juliet’s inability to wed Paris, being a married lady. This led to Friar’s next choice of giving Juliet the sleeping potion—making her appear dead. “Take this vial, being then in bed,” (4.1.93) Giving Juliet the poison was the reason why so many characters had died in the end of Act 5 of the play. Paris had died fighting Romeo because he thought he was attempting to steal Juliet’s “dead” body. Romeo, ignorant of the fact that Juliet was not dead, killed himself. Juliet committed suicide because of her fiancé lying next to her lifeless. The poison given by Friar
To start with, Friar Laurence is most to blame for the events that occur in Romeo and Juliet because he secretly married Romeo and Juliet.
First of all, Friar Laurence is responsible for the passing of Romeo and Juliet because he gives poor advice. This piece of text is Friar Laurence speaking to Juliet after she came to him for help, “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off; When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse” (Shakespeare 1075). In other words, Friar Laurence told Juliet to take a potion that would put her into a coma-like state, so her parents and other family members
In conclusion I believe that Friar Laurence is mainly to blame for this tragedy between Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet were just too naïve to think about their actions full effect, when Friar Laurence who is a much older and should have been much wiser did not think of the consequences when he really should of and gave them both horrible advice. That is why a believe Romeo and Juliet’s tragedy is to be blamed on Friar Laurence’s
To start off, Friar Laurence is the most to blame for the outcome of the play because he makes Juliet drink poison. During the play Friar Laurence tells Juliet a way to avoid the marriage of Paris. “Hold daughter I do spy a kind of hope… If rather to marry Paris, Thou hast the energy of will to slay thyself…” (4.1.69-73). What this evidence shows is that the Friar “only” believes that Juliet has to make herself appear dead and there is no other way to approach this. Some may argue that it’s Romeo’s fault for not waiting for Juliet to wake up, however Romeo never did get the letter that Juliet was going to appear dead so that’s the Friar’s fault for not being able to get the letter to Romeo.
Romeo is to blame for the tragedy in romeo and juliet. He is to blame because romeo kills Tybalt,This is because juliet loved her cousin tybalt and romeo killed him so she was upset at romeo for killing him.Romeo is to blame for this horrible tragedy because romeo and juliet grow apart a little bit , since romeo is banished from the city, juliet couldn't see romeo as much because he wasn't allowed to come back.”The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, and the place death, considering who thou art,if any of my kinsmen find thee here, so romeo crossed the capulets fence so he would be able to see juliet. Some might say that friar lawrence is to blame because he made the potion for juliet but romeo is still to blame because he wouldn't listen
Most people would think Romeo and Juliet are to blame for theirtragic death.Romeo and Julietis a true Shakespeare tragedy inthe way that both main characters die in the end with a downfall in society.however have you ever considered the role FriarLaurence played in this tragedy? The playRomeo and JulietbyWilliam Shakespeare is about two star-crossed lovers Romeo andJuliet. Their families are feuding, but they still find lovewith each other. After a series of unfortunate events, the twoyoung loves end up committing suicide. To prove the thesis thatFriar Laurence is to blame for Romeo and Juliet death one has toknow how their death came in to play. First, when Friar Laurencegot in the mix and decides to secretly marry the two and havethem not
He was going to give her a vile that lets her be dead for 42 hours. He said, “ Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, then it is likely thou wilt undertake a thing like death to chide away this shame,” He is saying that if you are willing to kill yourself you are brave enough to pretend dead. He gave Juliet the “fake” poison to act dead for 42 hours, knowing that the plan wouldn’t go as planned. He gives Juliet the potion, and fails to make sure Romeo gets the message. He gave the letter to Friar John so he can go give it to Romeo. He failed to do this until it was too late. These are just a few reasons why Friar Laurence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight. But they are of feuding families and cannot be truly together. Their families feud breaks them apart and forces them not to be together, leaving Juliet to marry Paris unless she can change what is to happen. Juliet drinks a potion given to her by Friar Lawrence and falls into a sleep that makes her seem to be dead.
People have always believed in love at first sight, but no one foresaw how tragic love could truly be. William Shakespeare, in the play Romeo and Juliet, showed this beautifully. Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, a tragic yet timeless tale of two teens from rivaling families falling in love with each other. Their young yet fiery love was kept a secret, by not only them, but by Friar Lawrence and Juliet's Nurse, the only two other people who knew about the two lovers. Through many unfortunate twists and turns, however, both Romeo and Juliet, along with four others, ended up dead. Although many people shared blame, the two people most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet were Lord and Lady Capulet and Friar Lawrence.
