Royal Ontario Museum is known to be one of the best attractions in Toronto. Out of all the guests, according to the ROM’s exit survey, 71% of guests were families. Furthermore, younger visitors, including millennials, were more general visitors whom came to with no specific purpose. A study from the National Endowment for the Arts found that in 2008 23-24% of the millenials went to a museum once in a year. In 2012, only 18-22% of the millenials did so (GBriff, 2015). The museums are consistently experiencing drop in younger visitors. The ROM, knowing the potential of attracting younger generations, seeks to appeal to the millennials by conducting best and current practice research. The Victoria and Albert Museum created many different ways to interact with the visitors. First, they created their website to be easily navigated and created interactive exercises such as “Design a Wig” to promote their exhibitions. By visitors having fun with creating a wig, it builds anticipation on their visit and creates more reason to visit the museum. At the museum itself, visitors will be met with the Hands-On Exhibitions. The exhibitions allows the visitors to try on Victorian costumes, make a brass rubbing or a giant slider puzzle, try on armour gauntlet, design their own tea post, and more (). Through out the whole experience, the visitors are met with fun interactive activities that are not only geared toward children, but adults as well. At Science Museum London, they take pride in their own section of interactive exhibits. Launchpad, packed with over 50 interactive exhibits geared to ward 8-14 years old, is now closed as the museum prepares to open new Interactive Gallery. The new Interactive Gallery, 60% larger than Launchpad will engage all visitors in the drama and spectacle of math and science (). This change was done to better engage the adults, especially experience seeking millennials. One of Gen Y panel member from Millennial Marketing recalled that: “My best museum experiences were London Science Museum and Victoria & Albert. One common thing these both museums have is that they mange to interact with their visitors. Once you walked into the exhibition hall, you find yourself in some place like Wonderland. The interior design, interactive tools and toys are simply designed to create a magical experience. It is never boring. A magical land would never be boring.”
Canada is a multicultural nation whose population was vastly built through the immigration of peoples from around the world. The McCord Museum of Canadian History explores Canada’s multiculturalism through several exhibits. The museum was brought to life by David Ross McCord who wished to “shed light on the history and cultures of his country and thus bring its people together.” The Museum features several exhibits which are physically available at the museum, and some of which are available online. One of the online exhibits entitled Being Irish O’Quebec explores the impact in which Irish culture has had on the province of Quebec from past to present.
Into the Heart of Africa, an exhibition presented by The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) that was curated by guest curator Dr. Jeanne Cannizzo was a source of much contention between the people and the museum. The exhibit was inspired by an interest in exploring the hundreds of African artefacts – which had been stolen and collected during the European colonization of African countries – that have been stored by the ROM for over a hundred years. Through this collection of artefacts, Cannizzo intended on retelling the story of Canada’s involvement in the European colonization of Africa. Another aspect that I found to be very interesting was the way in which each of the museums offered different multimedia formats to facilitate the visitor’s experience with the artwork in display. I noticed that both museums offered applications for smartphones and tablets, free of charge, to assist the visitors with getting the most possible out of the museum. Visiting a museum can be a very distracting task because there is so much to see and without a plan or a navigating system that helps you make your way towards the museum, it can be hard to gain something from your visit. Both apps are accessible to most people and very easy to navigate through. These apps included audio guides, exhibition information, calendars, events and so on. However, I noticed
I hope to see museums make more concerted efforts to educate the public. Too many exhibits are of the “passive, didactic looking” than like the engaging Object Stories program (Dartt, Murawski). Exhibits should seek to tell untold narratives, and programs should be places of communication and cross-cultural encounters. For too long, difficult confrontations have been avoided, both inside the museum, and by dominant communities
When someone says they are visiting Daytona Beach, usually everyone imagines one of two scenarios. Either they are picturing sunny skies and golden sands, or they are imaging the sound of roaring engines as NASCAR drivers fly around corners, driving in circles for hours upon hours. They are the main attractions of the Daytona Beach area, luring millions of tourist from across the country all year round. What many don’t realize though is that Daytona Beach, and Volusia County itself, is also a great center of cultural learning. Across Volusia County you can find museums, art galleries, and pieces of history scattered all over the place.
The woman who I spoke to at the front desk was very kind and considerate. She was very friendly and trusting and I made me very excited to see the gallery. I was also very encouraged at how many children were present and enjoying their learning experience. I believe that the majority of archaeology’s worth comes from how the public benefits, even if it is only some joy at learning an interesting fact. Seeing children introduced to history and archaeology so young and enjoying the encounter is one that will always bring me a great amount of joy. So, although I wish adults could also benefit from this museum, I truly appreciate its ability to engage childrens’
Quebec City is divided into two parts. They are Upper Town and Lower Town. The northeastern end of Upper Town is still surrounded by walls. These walls hold many treasured attractions such as the stunning basilica of Notre Dame. This beauty has endured a long history of bombardment, reconstruction and restoration but remains a powerful symbol of how strong a role the church plays in Quebec history. The Ursuline Covent and Museum is the oldest girls school on the continent. Among the many wondrous structures is some additional charm with surprises like Rue du Tresos leading from Place dArmes where artists gather to display their works, and the latin Quarter with the eighteenth century homes, cafes and shops. Throughout the experience, I learned the importance and care of working with an artifact along with operations within a museum. As I toured Heartland Museum, I witnessed all of the items that are stored behind the scenes because museums only keep a small percentage of the belongings on display. I also learned about the process of creating a display, which includes piecing together many details like attraction, relevance, and of course history. Museums must worry about the community’s interest in the displays. Lastly, I learned about the importance of an artifact by working with some of the items. It is important to handle artifacts with care because of the fragility of the item. After the information I learned at the museum, it was my turn to experience the public
While some may view museums as homes of the dusty, decrypt, and decaying, I think back fondly to the memories I've made in them. When I was four and living in a small apartment in Shaker Heights, Ohio, my father would take me to the Cleveland Museum of Rock and Roll on the weekends when he wasn’t busy working on his MBA at Case Western Reserve University. Every time we visited, I would tell my father that I would grow up to be just like Elvis, to which he would laugh and scoff affectionately. When we moved to Glen Allen, Virginia when I was six, we would occasionally drive up to Washington, D.C. to the Smithsonian Museums. On some Saturdays, we would walk for hours through the halls of art I didn't understand (and still don’t really understand) at the Museum of American Art. On other Saturdays, we would go to the Library of Congress, where I would press my forehead against the glass of the observation deck—much to the dismay of security guards. But perhaps the most significant "museum" I've been in is just a short three-minute drive or seven-minute walk from my suburban home: the Twin Hickory Public Library.

When people think about a museum most of them think about walking around starring at paintings they don’t understand and reading the little cards with their description. After a while they get tired of walking around long hallways and finally decide to leave. On the other hand, the Gallery One at the Cleveland Museum of Arts is more than just a museum, it’s a fun and innovative environment that how Alexander explained, “… the intention of Gallery One was to transform visitors into participants, rather than passive observers.” (2014). When people get their hands on the action they are most likely to have fun, learn, and build experience.
There are opportunities though, and they are good opportunities. I was able to identify three that they should pay attention to and really hit hard on. In today’s economy, people aren’t wanting to spend a lot of money. The recession is making people be a lot more conscious about money. Good news, the museum is free. If marketed properly, this could be a huge way to gain new visitors. Plus, art museums have sophisticated connotations that make people feel smart when they go to them. What better way to spend the day than to go somewhere that is free and feel sophisticated? Another opportunity is that new exhibits could attract younger demographics, pending on the exhibit. This could be tricky though because they want to attract everyone, but older crowds are interested in things that younger generations aren’t. They have to be able to balance the attractions so everyone can relate to it and want to view it.
Refurbishing of Ashdown Museum led to a dramaticly increase in the number of visitors, with 74000 grew up to 92000. From the chart, a considerable improvement of visitors’ attitudes can also be see-- 35% visitors felt very satisfied, which is more than doubled the percentage in the year before refurbishment, and 40% visitors felt satisfied while 30% of them felt so before.
According to the American Alliance of Museums, community engagement in museums includes the use of this facility as “a center where people gather to meet and converse and an active, visible player in civic life, a safe haven, and a trusted incubator of change” (Long 141). Different museums
A greater number of educators are looking to museums to help them attain their educational objectives. Howard Gardner has identified Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood as the perfect environment for stimulating the natural curiosity of a child. Furthermore, in response to demands for new educational approaches, older children are using museums to develop their critical facilities in art and design (Campbell, 1992).
