In this study, we will find out if social media being present will cause conversation to take place between groups of people that know each other, as well as complete strangers. What also will be recorded is whether the use of social media will result in social media interactions, as opposed to face to face interactions. An example of this would be if a person using social media on their tablet saw a YouTube video, and due to how funny they found the video, they then proceeded to text friends or post information on Facebook and/or Twitter about the video. This study will take place in two different locations, the first place being a Starbucks coffee shop in Coalinga, CA, while the second place will be West Hills Community College in Coalinga, CA. The setting’s benefits and weaknesses will be discussed later in this research assignment. The purpose of this location is to record the actions and uses of social media with complete strangers, as well as groups of people that know each other. By monitoring the interactions of people in a coffee shop, the author is able to see how much time that people rely on social media in a half hour setting. The coffee shop is used primarily as a place to study, interact in groups, read the newspaper, or to simply drink coffee. As opposed to a restaurant, where it is a more social atmosphere and it may be considered rude by patrons for people in their group to use their cell phones,
Technology grows everyday. We see technological advancements everywhere throughout the world, whether it is a new phone being released, a new computer being invented, or a new scientific experiment used in the medical field. Technology is constantly expanding, and with this expansion, we must ask ourselves one question: do we rely too heavily on technology? When discussing technology, there are limits and fine lines between using and abusing these technologies that are at hand, but as we discover these limits and ask ourselves this question, we look at the generation of fresh adults in our local area who are entering college and the growth of social media within this generation. Undoubtedly, young Americans utilize social media everyday whether
Probably one of the more prevalent arguments in the past five to ten years is that of the effects of social media. Is it something we should avoid? Does it affect our personal lives? Is it a detrimental or advantageous tool for society? There’s a wide variety of opinions on the matter, and while many arguments have been made defending (and attacking) both sides of the controversy, research and experiences show that social media is an invaluable asset to our lives today.
These drawbacks include too many people being reliant to talking online rather than in person and not verbally communicating with friends even though they are in the same room. Jasmine Fowlkes shows the reality in how social media is affecting our new generation through her article, “Viewpoint: Why Social Media is Destroying our Social Skills.” After discussing the results conducted by several researchers, Fowlkes states,“As more generations are born into the social age, social media will continue to be the favored communication form among young people. However, this shift may begin to affect their ability to properly communicate in person with peers.” Many start to rely on applications on our devices to talk to people, but this results in less verbal communication. In addition, Kelly-Fay’s Talktrack research study showed that conversations held in person are much more impactful than on social media. Rather than making social media a huge part of your life, Fowlkes wishes that people would look up from their phones and engage more with others since that could change their lives.
Since the invention of the Internet, people have become indulged with its copious functions, from making advanced programs to learning how to do new projects to social media. Social media has evolved over the years, from Friendster to Myspace to Facebook, since the late 1990s, and people have incorporated it into their lives. It is the modern way for people to connect and communicate with anyone and everyone across the globe. Plus, social media is everywhere; people utilize it when they are on the bus, at the checkout line, and even when they are using the restroom. In Peggy Orenstein’s “The Way We Live Now: I Tweet, Therefore I Am,” she propounds that social media has altered society. Social media has changed society’s priorities, characteristics, and mentality.

These days social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become an essential part of our daily lives in America. It is through media sources such as these that have enabled communication among people on a global scale along with uniting people with similar interests and ideas together in a positive manner. According to statistics from the Pew Research Center, around seven in ten Americans use some type of social media (Pew Research). The development of mobile devices has played a significant role in the widespread development of social media by facilitating the access to these sites. Today the use of social media is for purposes of
New innovations to technology have provided people easier and more frequent access to social media sites and apps. According to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority in 2014 social media was most commonly accessed via laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Social media is the number one thing Canadians do online. (CIRA, 2014). Every social media site posts the number of users that it has on a worldwide scale. Given this is a Canadian proposed study here are some statistics of Canadian social media use. According to a survey done by Canadian’s internet.com Business in 2015 about 56% use Facebook, 16% use instagram, 30% Linkedin and 25% use Twitter. (McKinnon, 2015)
Technology has become very advanced and very important to our society. One thing that has become very big because of our technology is social networking. There are many positives to having easy access to social media, but there are also negative effects as well. The impact of all this social media has overall a negative effect on our daily lives in society. In “‘r u online?’: The Evolving Lexicon of Wired Teens”, by Kris Axtman, Kris talks about how instant messaging has affected the the communication of the younger people in our generation. In “Note To Selfie”, by John Dickerson, he writes about how people are pausing their lives to post about their happenings on social media. These two authors discuss some negative aspects to having social

Although technology can help us express ourselves and stay connected with others, this doesn’t mean we have to use it all the time, and have it be all we ever do, and become addicted. Social media allows us to stay in contact with and maintain long distance relationships, or if you just want to text a friend about plans over the weekend or on a break(Doc 2). But we can use this to create more opportunities of face to face interaction rather than mindlessly scrolling through unimportant feed. Statistics show that our
Social media plays a large part of communication in today’s society. After reviewing recent pew results on the amount of social media use in America there was a large number of people on the Internet. Greenwood, Perrin, and Duggan (2016)
The social media is one of the most common ways of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, and that it negatively effects their brains, character, or personalities, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Moreover, social media has helped many people around the world to connect, or re-connect, with each other, easily. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each

The internet has a greater impact on people today than ever before. It has been a constant source of news, entertainment, and education for users around the world for more than twenty years. However, the most revolutionary of its technologies, social media, didn’t achieve mainstream popularity until about ten years ago. As a result of this new development, Facebook, Twitter, and similar services are becoming the most visited destinations on the internet. These websites allow users to quickly and easily share pictures, links, ideas and messages with other users; theoretically facilitating social interaction. But do these self-proclaimed social networking tools actually encourage healthy human interaction? The evidence suggests that they do.
