The novel, Tangerine, is full of thrills, surprises, action and secrets. The protagonist, Paul Fisher is a middle schooler who damaged his eyes because he apparently looked into a solar eclipse. Paul’s brother named Erik Fisher is a junior from high school who is really good as a field goal kicker, but bullies Paul. Paul’s family goes by the Erik Fisher football dream which is getting Erik to college football. However, things change once Paul’s family moves to Tangerine, Florida. Secrets get revealed, stories change and Paul discovers more about his past. He learns more about the bully living right next to him. In the novel, Tangerine, Edward Bloor strategically uses theme and motif to show conquering fear. First of the all, the novel, Tangerine, uses theme to show conquering fear. The author’s purpose into choosing this is to show him becoming brave as we seen in page 261 when Paul states, “I’m not afraid of you Erik. Come on.” Later, in page 262, Paul shows his bravery by saying, “ ‘I’ve already been in the right place at the wrong time, you lowlife creeps. You pathetic losers. I was under the bleachers on Tuesday afternoon.’ I raised my fingers like it was loaded and pointed it at Arthur. ‘I saw you kill Luis Cruz.’ ”. The author’s purpose in using motif is as the nature is weird for him. In page 81, it states, “I looked and saw the entire portable get swallowed up by the mud.” From this is says there is a sinkhole and later we can see Paul showing bravery. In page 82, it states that, “We pulled and grabbed at kids as they made their up… ”. The lightning happens a lot in Tangerine and causes the Muck fires. The lightning represents how bad things happen to people in the novel Tangerine. “He was just standing there in the end zone. He had one hand on the goalpost, leaning on it, and kaboom!” (Bloor, 50) This quote shows how Mike Costello, was tragically struck by lightning and killed. Not only is death a bad thing for Mike himself and his football career, but also is very tragic for his family as well. “There really is no other time to practice, so we would a team that did not practice.” This affects the football season and the players for a short while, because they are discussing the fact on when they should practice. First, a choice made by Paul is when he gave his statement to the police about what he witnessed. He stated, “I saw him do it. I saw Arthur Bauer sneak up on Luiz Cruz like a coward and hit him on the side of the head. Luiz didn’t even see it coming.” This choice helped him develop because he felt as though ever since he met Luiz that he was special and meant something to him, so he needed to tell what actually happened at the high school.
