In Scott Russel’s essay, The Men We Carry in Our Minds, he discusses some of the men that impacted his life while he was growing up. Like Russel, almost everyone has an adult figure that impacted them while they were growing up. I was lucky to have many positive influences as a child. Not many people had the same opportunities as I did. Growing up, my mom was a big impact on my life. Two days of the week she was a dental assistant. The other days she was just my mom. When she came home on the days after work she would smell minty and fresh from working in her dental office. I feel blessed to have been able to have my mother as a constant influence in my life. She showed me that I could be as mother as well as have a good job; I did not need to pick one or the other. My mother taught me how to stand up for myself and how not to be a pushover. One of the most important things I think that my mother taught me was how to be compassionate. Even as a young child when I heard about some of the terrible things that had happened in the world, my heart broke for those …show more content…
He worked every day from Monday to Friday. When I was younger, my dad worked in the oil field. Not an easy job, but I never heard him complain about how he wished he could stay at home and look after my sister and I instead of going to work every day. Instead he woke up early every morning and was often gone before I was even awake. When he came home from work he smelled like oil and often had dirty clothes. I used to love giving my dad a hug and just soaking in his scent. His scent reminded me that I was safe and that he would always take care of me. Just like my mother, my father does not believe in gender inequality. He does not believe that it is harder to be a man or that it is harder to be a woman. He believes that each gender has different struggles. Being a stay-at-home mom is a hard job. So is going to work for five days of the
My mother has always had major health issues, going in and out of hospitals all the time, but she wouldn't go down without a fight, and luckily, we still have her here with us. Any mother would want the best for her children, so one day my mom dropped everything in Reynosa and decided to move here, to the United States, in order to give us more opportunities and a real chance to succeed. Therefore, my parents have taught me to be the responsible, strong, and hard working person I am today.
My mom has been through a lot with me she got me healthy even if she was sick during the time I was a baby, She has helped me with my reading and writing disability and has pushed me to do my best. She is a strong confident woman that is loving she loves to attend to people and has a great smile. She has shown me that even if times are hard you have to bring your head up and raise it high. I maybe a mama’s boy but my mom is one of my greatest role models and people I admire.
When we were growing up my mother made sure my siblings and I were always taken care of. She would sacrifice her own happiness for ours.
Growing up my mom was the only parent in my household, so naturally we were a very close family. My mom took care of all of us. She always made sure my siblings and I had everything we needed in order to be successful. She cooked, clean, worked, etc., she really was a super mom. Whenever I had a problem with something or needed to talk to someone she was always there for me. My mom gave
While George and I share same social aspects we also share some personal aspects with each other. Like George, I was left without a father figure in my life. George’s father and my father left around the same time in our lives, which I find particularly interesting. Our fathers left when we were between the ages of seven and ten years old. As our fathers left we were looked at as the “man of the house” in our household. This might seem like a big responsibility for young boys our age but, we established ways to make a positive result for ourselves and those affected by the situation.
In the essay, “The Men We Carry in Our Minds”, Scott Russell Sanders discusses his perspective on men in comparison to the impression that women carry in their minds. Sanders uses a unique way of writing through narration and life experiences to truly illustrate his point that the impressions of men or women are based on ones own life experiences. As a young boy knowing only of the hardships of workingmen, Sanders later experiences drastic social differences when he receives a scholarship to attend a university “meant for the children of the
In "The Men We Carry in Our Minds," Scott Russel Sanders tries to show how his views on men are completely different from the views that some women hold. He traces the problem to the country surroundings of his youth. He explains that the men he observed as a child were completely different from the men whom most women might observe. The differing viewpoints between him and the women he met in college caused him some grief. However, it was not so much an issue of gender, but an issue of class.
My mom has made a huge impact on my life, yet she may never know it. My mom does so much for me and my brothers that she usually doesn’t take time for herself. That impacts me a lot because it shows me what a hard-working woman looks like. She
There have been a vast number of lives that have touched mine. Many different people have shared a piece of their soul in my formation. However, it is my mother who is the most important and most influential person in my life. My mother raised me by herself since the day I was born. My father was abusive and she left to make a better life for the both of us. She has worked as many as four jobs at one time. My mother wants to make sure my brothers and I have a better life than she did. It hasn’t always been easy for her, taking care of us on her own, trying to pay bills and making sure we had everything we needed. My mom has always had us involved in sports at a very young age. We always were doing something or involved in something
My mother has a substantial impact on my life which shaped me into the college-ready young man I am today. When I was just a sophomore in high school she got arrested and removed out of my life in a flash. My two sisters and I did not know what to do. We had no father figure in our life, so, our grandparents came in and took us under their wing. Not knowing what to do, I was panicking asking myself questions like what am I going to do now and where am I going to attend school. These were really tough decisions knowing that I do not have a say in what happens. Having to leave all my close childhood friends, along with all the memories I had made in my hometown, it was a very dramatic sequence of events.
Watching my mother live from pay check to pay check when I was young was difficult. It was always hard for my mom to keep up with other parents but, she still somehow managed to get me everything I wanted, and more. Even though I was too young to understand, I could feel the stress, and the struggles my mom faced every day. She was only 20 years old when I was born and, because of that she had no choice but to grow up fast. At such a young age, I saw the effects of being a single parent, and the ways it changed my mom. She not only had to be a young mother but, she had to find a way to replace the void of a father, or a father figure in my life. My mom was strong, independent and courageous. Growing up watching her live her dreams under all the circumstances she faced, made me want to strive for a better life for myself. Seeing how hard is was to live and to have enough
However, whether it was good or bad, positive or negative, right or wrong, these experiences have shaped my moral and ethical development and made me who I am today. My mother taught me to respect my elders and peers at all times. She also told me not to pre-judge other people. Her saying was, “never judge a book by its cover” (Mama). I never truly understood it until I grew up and began to experience life. She said always be kind, and “never bite the hand that feeds you” (Mama). She never took the time to explain what these saying meant, so I had to learn them the hard way.
As for myself, I looked up to my mother for her ability to work side by side with my father at American Motors doing a man's job. Not to mention, she also attended night school to obtain her high school diploma. Albeit, the disappointing relationship I experienced with my mother the very fact that she did not have anyone tell her what she should or cannot do along with, the boundaries she was crossing as a woman she moved beyond what the average women were was doing during that time frame, most woman
Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first Sunday so few days before I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace with a star pendant on it. I remember her warm hug and her telling me good luck and that I was ‘her star’. It touched me that she took time out of her busy schedule to encourage and support things that she knew were important to me. She could have just wished me well and enjoyed her few minutes of spare time, but instead she put me first.
She taught me important lessons and one of them was how to be an independent female. she told me if I wanted to be successful, college will lead you the right path that you need to be at. Whenever she told me stuff like this, it would help and encourages me a lot. I have never been in any hard situation in my life and that’s because my mom is always by my side. Whether she’s away from me or not, distance will never separate us no matter what. she is my inspiration and he keeps me motivated to get my degree heart Surgeon, my dream job.
