The Norwalk Virus : The Noroviruses And Caliciruses

The Norwalk virus is part of a group called the Noroviruses and caliciruses. It is known to cause gastroenteritis, infection within food, food poisoning, and even the short lived nonbacterial gastroenteritis. It can spread from contaminated water and infected foods. It can even spread anywhere, even on a cruise ship. A pleasant vacation may have some passengers choosing to jump ship, if the Norwalk virus is a passenger on board.
The virus has received its name from its birth in Norwalk Ohio. It was responsible for a short term outbreak of gastroenteritis occurring in the students of Bronson elementary school in November of 1968. One of the first places that will be discussed where outbreaks have taken place is in nursing homes. In most of these cases, it was believed to be brought into the facility by contaminated food or water from an outside vendor. However, once it began to infect a few residents it quickly spread from person to person among the residents. It is easily spread in these type of facilities due to the tight living conditions that place more than one person in each room, the lower levels of cleanliness that result from residence who cannot move, are incontinent, or suffering from reduces mental capacities.
The other place outbreaks occur is at restaurants and catered events. In the state of Minnesota during 1981-1998 at least 41% of the 295 foodborne illnesses met the criteria for the Norwalk virus. In the same state but 1996-1998, 70% of 23 outbreaks were in fact also linked to the Norwalk virus and a few other viruses from the Caliciviridae family. Further investigations have linked the outbreaks to contaminated food items such as oysters, salads, sandwiches, cakes, drinking water, and even ice just to name a few.
It is no surprise that passengers and crew on cruise ships and other boating vessels are very frequently affected by the Norwalk viruses and other strands of the Caiciviridae family. The problem lies sometimes with when the ships are required to dock in other countries where the levels of cleanliness and sanitation might not be up to par. This then increases the risk
