The Other Wes Moore is a story that details two men, by the same name, living two very different lives in Baltimore, Maryland. The author’s story is of success. He left the Bronx to become a respectable citizen of society. While the other Wes Moore became a lifelong tenant of a federal person for his actions. The two life comparisons drive criminology theories of nature versus nurture for the black community. Moore, statistically, had a natural chance of having a better ending to his life’s journey than the black American Wes. His mother was well educated striving for the American Dream and had not been run down by the black stigma that festered in the slum area of the city. Moore was sent out of the Bronx to a mostly white private school. The school was decently funded giving Moore a better education that in a public school. He was completely removed from a toxic environment but this caused a conflict of identity within himself. The school was overwhelmingly a white population. In returning to his mother’s home, he struggled with the identity of a bright Caribbean child and an American-born black. He rebelled the prep school by getting himself in trouble with the law. Moore was caught tagging and aggressed with his friend Shea. He describes during their arrest “[he] didn’t know it at the time but once alone, we both started crying” (89). Moore understood at this moment that his actions were wrong and had consequences that could ultimately destroy his future. When most people hear the name Wes Moore, they think of the Wes Moore that is a decorated veteran and author, but when Wes Moore hears his name, he thinks about not himself, but the Wes Moore serving life in prison for first-degree felony murder. They both grew up in similar settings and both had trouble with the police, but there lives are the complete opposite now. Most people wonder how that could happen. Each Wes ended up on totally different paths as evidenced by actions and events that took place in each of their lives. Despite his multiple target audiences, the author has one overall purpose for his book: to show what happens when a person full of potential gives up hope. In the beginning of “The Other Wes Moore”, I was introduced to two both of the Wes Moore’s. They both had similar upbringings. They were both raised in Baltimore, Maryland. They each lacked a father-figure in their life, so circumstances for their families were difficult in regards to finances. In the era that they grew in, there was a typical stereotype for a young, black male growing up with an absent father. However, both of the Wes’s found themselves in similar situations when drugs and violence came to hand. Yet, only one of the Wes’s were fortunate enough to escape the poor fate.

The story starts off around the 2000s when the Baltimore Sun put out a small piece of Wes Moore. The piece was about a robbery in which a police officer was killed. Ironically the police was hunting two brothers, one named Wes Moore.
