Introduction Introversion was defined as “withdrawn and often shy, and they tend to focus on themselves, on their own thoughts and feelings” (Jung, 1923) Therefore focusing on this personality trait can help to better understand why people tend to be reserved and withdrawn from everyday life. Carl Jung was the creator of the neopsychoanalytical approach, which focused on psychic energy. While Gordon Allport and Hans Eysenck contributor to the trait theory, focused on biology and individualized traits. Jung, Eysenck and Allport focused on extrovert vs. introvert, yet had completely different ideas of how introversion is seen in everyday life. Personally believeing this trait is one I carry, focusing on completely different approaches will bring light to many explanations of why people act the way they do, including myself. By using both case studies and personal work from the works of Jung, Eysenck, and Allport researching introversion should not be a an issue. Although there is a lot of work to do with introversion, through this research one can get a better overview. Trait Definition Carl Jung has defined introversion as “withdrawn and often shy, and tend to focus on themselves along with their own thoughts and/or feelings.” Jung also found that everyone starts off with introversion and extroversion, but with time and life experience only the dominant one is the one that shows Therefore, for example two young children going through different life experience can both end
Susan Cain, a well known and appreciated writer from America in the field of psychology, recently held a speech on one of the famous TED talks and entirely captured me by trying to give the audience an understanding of introversion.
Introversion are traits where a person is more mindful of their own thoughts and feelings rather than their surrounding environment. Have you ever met someone that seemed to be more reserved than others? Someone who tends to keep their emotions private? Someone who is more of a social
Guilford (1959) defines personality traits as being ‘any distinguishable, relatively enduring way in which one individual varies from another’. Subsequently, trait theory can be identified as an approach to the study of human personality. The aim of psychologists, specifically trait theorists, is to explain similarities and differences between individuals based on traits. Although numerous psychologists differ on the amount of traits that are significant, each theorist categorizes personality traits along several broad type spectrums. This assignment will focus on comparing and contrasting Eysenck’s Hierarchical Theory of Personality and Costa and McRae’s Five Factor Model (FFM), two different trait theories of personality.
In her article Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic? author Susan Cain addresses many of the preconceived notions society has against introverted people. Cain argues that society tends to favor the outgoing and extroverted and shames those who prefer to be alone rather than socialize. The author utilizes certain writing strategies as a way to change her audience’s original views surrounding introversion. Cain’s use of comparing and contrasting, specific examples, and strong transitions that bridge various ideas to each other make her argument, that introverts are essential to society, much more persuasive.
The article “Introversion: The Often Forgotten Factor Impacting the Gifted” by Jill D. Burruss and Lisa Kaenzig begins by giving examples of how an introvert may behave. The authors continue by explaining that introversion is in not an issue, but a personality type which differs from that of the “normal,” more outgoing and friendly personality type, extroversion. Introverts and extroverts are different personality types, most people fall into one of the two categories. Typically, an introvert’s main focus is in the internal world of thoughts, while an extrovert's main focus is on the external world of people and events. Introverts tend to enjoy alone time, working on their own, and are usually quiet, and extroverts are typically social, enjoy
Cain writes about shyness, introversion, social anxiety disorder, and extroversion. She compares introversion to extroversion. We need equally kinds of people in society. In my experience, people display both characteristics at the same time. The article shyness and evolutionary tactic is an interesting article because the current social judgment favors extroverts but does a disservice to introverts who also make important contributions to sociality.
My career assessment test for the personality results show that I am, INFJ that is indicated as I- Introverted: tend to be inwardly focused, drawing energy from contemplation, ideas and reflection. It stated I was sixty-seven percent introverted and about thirty-three percent extroverted. My assessment test mentions that I would tend to be more inwardly directly in my emotional focus, and concentrating more on my own thoughts and ideas than on outer motivations. It says I will attract energy from within, meaning from a personal inspiration, thoughts and or reflection. Usually, introverts might be considered more quiet and withdrawn than extroverts, who tend to be very talkative and social. I feel that is somewhat true about me, because sometimes
The results of my DISC Assessment test were extremely interesting, and in my opinion, quite accurate as well. My results showed that I am very decisive and interactive, then I am moderately stable, but not very cautious, systematic, or much of a perfectionist. These results also tied in fairly closely with my Jung Typology personality test results, which I will explain throughout the latter portion of my paper. My DISC results also ranked my seven dimensions of value and motivation. Not surprisingly for me, “altruistic” was my highest value, sitting at 93 out of 100. This is because I have a very high sincerity and genuine interest in helping others. As well as I am a giving person who desires to provide an environment in which there is opportunity
Both Costa and McCrae’s Five Factor theory of personality and Eysenck’s PEN theory have been the subject of significant research in an effort to better understand human personality. This paper focuses on two opposing theories: Costa and McCrae’s Five Factor model, a lexically-based theory with five factors, and Eysenck’s PEN model, a biologically-based theory with three core traits of personality.
The term "introvert" and "extrovert" were coined by the early 1920's Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. The general definition were that extroverts were focused on the outer world while their counterparts, introverts, were focused on the inner world. Throughout the years since his discovery, introversion in particular has been diluted and has lost its meaning. In modern society introversion and shyness are lumped in the same category. Introversion as define by the Merriam Webster Dictionary is "the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one's own mental life." Shyness however is the act of feeling awkward and tense in social situations in worry the person might embarrass themselves; introversion
An introvert is a person that gathers their energy from within and requires time alone and would prefer to communicate by ways such as email and by writing and maybe texting they seem to prefer not to talk face to face and are not great public speakers. Introverts are often said to be reserved. They are often said to enjoy the quiet and this is what
Introverts are people who spend time thinking and reflecting before they act. Their motivation is internal, which might end up closing them off from the world around them. Introverts usually prefer one-to-one relationships, and only express intimacy with a few family members or close friends. Introverts also love doing activities that allow them to be put in an organizational position. Occasionally, introverts will shut down and close off from all of those around them. Personally, I believe that is a completely accurate description of myself. I also plan out my days ahead of time, and I love being able to put things together. While I sometimes I think that it is a negative thing, I do tend to close off from my circle, which happens to be very small. If I do get to meet my goal of being a teacher, my introversion definitely yields to potential for problems. Getting out of my shell would be a challenge, without a doubt. That being said, my introversion is mostly geared towards others my age. I am usually very comfortable around people that are older or younger than I am, which makes me believe I would probably be okay. Other than having to overcome the challenge of opening up, being an introvert does have upsides, such as having an urge to get things done.
The study of personality traits is beneficial in identifying the many variables that exist from human to human; the combinations of these variables provide us with a true level of individuality and uniqueness. In the field of psychology, trait theory is considered to be a key approach to the study of human personality (Crowne, 2007; Burton, Westen & Kowalski, 2009). This paper aims to identify a number of significant contributors who have played crucial roles in both the development and application of trait theory. This paper then moves focus to these theorists, outlining their theory and analysing both the strengths and weaknesses of those theories. An illustration of the methods used in trait measurement is given and includes the
Personality distinguishes one individual different from another. Some personalities are more positive than others; however personality ultimately defines a person. Ample amounts of research and theories focus on personality. Researchers trust that investigation concerning personality provides a road map to truly understanding the individual. In an attempt to analyzing Michelle Obama’s personality, this paper will discuss the extrovert and introvert personality through using Eysenck’s Personality Theory and Allport’s Trait Theory; the two character theories illustrate two contrasting philosophies. Moreover, extrovert personalities hold characteristics such as combative, outgoing, determined, intolerant and hostility. On the contrary, introvert personality characteristics involve compromising reserved, wavering, and relaxed. Understanding the role that Eysenck’s Personality Theory and Allport’s Trait Theory play in Michelle Obama’s personality, will enrich one’s perception of her, exposing the extrovert and introvert traits of her personality.
Carl Jung was one of the first people who helped build up the trait approach , he came up with the two of the most likely used words used to describe individuals; Extroversion and Introversion. For Jung however the term extroversion referred to “an orientation toward things outside oneself, whereas introversion refers to a tendency to turn inward and explore ones feelings and experience(cite textbook). Introverts are in tune with their inner feelings so they are most likely to look at the world in terms of how it affects them whilst extroverts live their life surrounded by other people so they are most likely to be concerned with the impact they have on the world rather than the impact the worl has
