Justice for George’s Conscience In Steinbeck’s Of Mice of Men, George is confronted with the troubling conflict of ending his best and only friend’s life. In the depression stricken 1930’s, George Milton and Lennie Smalls are saving money until they can buy their dream homestead. This dream comes to a screeching halt when Lennie kills the boss’s son’s wife. George decides to end Lennie’s life while describing their dream homestead one last time . George should have killed Lennie because Curley would have tortured him, lennie was his responsibility, and he would have continued to do bad things. If George had not killed Lennie, he would have continued to do bad things. This is first shown when he grabbed the girl in Weed and him accidentally killing Aunt Clara’s mice. When Lennie killed the puppy and Curley’s wife it showed that Lennie was incapable of not doing bad things. Lennie did not understand his strength or why both girls tried to get away from him when he grabbed them. Steinback showed that Lennie was not aware that he was hurting the mice, the puppy, or Curley’s wife when he said, “All the time he done bad things, but he never done one of em’ mean.”(Steinback 95). George knew that even if he and Lennie ran away that Lennie's past would continue to follow them. Lennie was under the care of …show more content…
George was not going to be able sit aside and watch while they would have tortured him. Steinbeck describes Curley’s plans for torturing Lennie by writing, “I’m gonna shoot the guts outa that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand. I’m gonna get ‘im.” (98). Although some argue that they might have put Lennie in the laws custody, George thought that locking Lennie away in a mental asylum was even worse than shooting him. If Curley had tortured Lennie, Lennie would be like a small child and would not be able to grasp what was happening and why George was not stopping the
Death, the one thing every person will eventually face, could be seen as an end or an entrance. What is your extent of a friendship? How far are you willing to go to help the person you care for? For many reasons, the majority of people think murder is immoral—especially if it was your own best friend. But sometimes we may have to go to the extreme, as long as we know it was the right thing to do from the heart because that’s how much you know you care. In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, I strongly believe that George was right to kill Lennie.
Lennie would never be able to survive without George, Lennie would be miserable alone and scared.Lennie would have been tortured by Curley if George had not killed Lennie. Before George killed Lennie says "I remember the rabbits,George”.George and Lennie would not been able to get away since last time they had a head start . Lennie would suffer regardless with George even if he came to see him in prison.Lennie has no way out in this so George did the right thing by putting Lennie out of his misery by killing him.Curley would not just kill Lennie he would have made him suffer by torturing him because Lennie had humiliated Curly twice.
Individuals have had to do something they do not want to do at least once in their lives. It could be something small, or something to a bigger extent. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, many characters struggle with loneliness because the novel is set during the Great Depression when many people found it difficult to make a living. This is one of the reasons why many readers find it odd that Lennie Small and George Milton travel together in these desperate times. George and Lennie look out for each other at every place they go. At the Tyler Ranch, Lennie’s disability causes him to get into trouble, big trouble. George has to make the toughest decision of his life: kill his friend or let him die a painful death. George decided to kill Lennie because he would not be able to allow Lennie to experience misery. George Milton did not kill Lennie Small out of hate, but out of friendship.
“He shook her then, and he was angry with her. ‘Don’t you go yellin’,’ he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. (91).These was one of the events that took place at the end of John Steinbeck’s book, Of Mice and Men. After endless catastrophes and tragedies, Lennie small, a giant mental handicapped, and best friend of George. He makes a terrifying mistake of killing of Curley’s wife at the ranch. The men at the ranch try to bring Lennie to justice by killing him brutally. So, George should make a right decision of what to do with Lennie. In the end, George did the right thing by killing Lennie because he killed a woman, Lennie was mentally handicapped, and men at the ranch would have killed him.
His mental disability had caused the dream they had created to be ruined. Curley, the man on the ranch who picks on Lennie, currently has a wife that is very isolated and lonely and loves to talk to Lennie since he is a very warm and soft loving man until she had told Lennie to feel her hair. Lennie wouldn't let go and Curley's wife was struggling to get out of Lennie's grasp. "And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck" (Steinbeck 91). This quotation explains how Lennie had ruined the dream because he had killed a woman and would be expelled from working on the ranch, leading to not making any money towards their life dream. Since George knew the dream was over, and that it wouldn't happen, he had to find Lennie. Since Curley had picked on him and had made fun of him, Curley was already after Lennie to kill. George knew this was all happening and knew he had to find Lennie before them to tell him the dream one more time before he was going to die. George had found Lennie on the creek side in the forest and told him about their dream one more time. Then George had Lennie at gunpoint. "His hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger” (Steinbeck 106). This quote from Of Mice and Men explains to the reader that Lennie had ruined their dreams once and for all since he had done terrible things to halt the dream. George had to put Lennie out of his misery since he was already going to be killed. George wanted to share their dream together one more
Death, the one thing all of humanity will eventually face, could be seen as an end or an entrance. What is your extent of a friendship? How far are you willing to go to help the person you care for? For numerous reasons, a broad amount of people think murder is immoral—especially if it was your own best friend. But sometimes we may have to go to the extreme, as long as we know it was the right thing to do from the heart because that’s how much you know you care. In this story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, I strongly believe that George was right to kill Lennie.
The book i read was Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck. The two protagonist were George and Lennie. George was a small man, poor,a rancher, who was very compassionate to his friend Lennie. Lennie was a huge man, strong, with a child mind, who liked soft things. Lennie’s aunt died and George decided her he would be his caretaker. They both had the same American dream to own their own farm and to “live off the fat of the land”. George made a choice to take care of Lennie and had to live with a consequences.
George was justified in his decision to shoot Lennie because he was dangerous and would have been killed anyway.
Lennie and George were always together especially after Lennie's aunt Clara died. George explained his relationship with Lennie by saying, "Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin'. Got kinda used to each other after a little while” (Steinbeck 386). Lennie has always had someone to care for him. George took it upon himself to provide for Lennie after his aunt died. If something happens to George or they get separated Lennie wouldn’t know what to do. George killing Lennie was better off for the both of
Sometimes the hardest situations in life force you to make a difficult decision and that is exactly what George has to do. The book “Of Mice and Men” is a story based on 2 men, George and Lennie in the 1930’s. George and Lennie are traveling farm workers. Most travelers don’t travel with others, but Lennie and George have a different situation. Lennie is mentally challenged and a family friend of his, George, promised Lennie’s aunt Clara that he would take care of Lennie and do what is best for him while they are out working. Although some would argue that George did not make the right choice, George’s decision to kill Lennie was right due to the fact that Lennie would have lived a harsh life in prison, Lennie might have suffered in a mental institution and leastly Lennie wouldn’t have had the right medical attention to help with his gunshot wound.
In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s decision to kill Lennie at the end of the novel was justified. George did the right thing and his actions were justified because even though he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone he still killed somebody and it would be dangerous for him to continue being around people because he might do it again. Also no matter what George did Lennie would have suffered or died because Curley wanted to get him killed and if that's what he wanted that’s what was going to happen. Some people may say George knew that Lennie was innocent and didn’t mean to hurt anyone but he killed him instead of trying to fight for him to stay alive any longer. That idea wrong because George had fought for Lennie before but he can’t keep running away every time his friend makes a mistake. George was never able to feel safe or be happy somewhere because he didn’t get to stay long.
At the end of the book Of Mice and Men Lennie accidentally broke Curley's wife's neck. Afterwards George had to come up with a decision to let Lennie die happily or let Curly torture him. George made the right decision on killing Lennie because of the things that could happen to Lennie and George. First, If Lennie was not killed by George than he would have to go threw with terrible torture with Curly. Second, George would be a lot better off without Lennie always getting them fired and getting in trouble. Finally george let him die happily. Some people think that george made the wrong decision because Lennie did not mean to kill Curley’s wife but they are wrong because Lennie could have done more terrible things and he would not be able to help it.
Of Mice and Men Essay In the fictional novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s decision to kill Lennie at the end of the novel was justified. Lennie is the mentally handicapped best friend of George. Lennie got himself into trouble when he accidentally killed Curley’s wife. George’s decision to kill Lennie was justified because George was trying to prevent Lennie from a brutal and painful death, and living a life on the run isn’t really living.
The sound rang in your ears, his limp body fell to the ground, and your hand shook with the weight of your gun, and the blood of the person you just killed; your best friend. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s best friend is lying dead in front him, Lennie, who like George is just a character but is mentally disabled. And although Lennie may have killed Curley’s wife and is now in danger, George murdering Lennie doesn’t solve any issues. George was not justified in killing Lennie because they could’ve run away like they did in Weed, George betrayed Lennie’s trust, and by killing Lennie George shows he is a hypocrite to his own rules.
Did George do the right thing by killing Lennie? In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, that is the question that the reader is left asking. George and Lennie, lifelong friends, were torn apart by George putting Carlson’s luger to Lennie’s head and pulling the trigger. That was the end of the lifelong friendship, the end of what made them different than the other guys.
