The roles, responsibilities and boundaries of a teacher and establishing ground rules within a learning environment In this assignment I will explore my role, responsibilities and boundaries as a teacher within the teacher training cycle and will analyse the different ways in which I would establish ground rules with students which may promote good behaviour and respect for other students who are participating within the same learning environment (Gravells, 2010). According to Clarke (2006) the role, responsibilities and boundaries are evolving qualities within the teacher which are assessed and reflected upon using the teaching/training cycle; a cycle of assessment, planning and review. My main role as a teacher is to facilitate …show more content…
Group discussions of expectations and inclusion of all views may ensure that every student feels heard and included. This form of inclusion can facilitate a memorable establishment of ground rules/boundaries which are individually as well as collectively meaningful. However, this may be compromised by students with special needs such as auditory problems and students whose first language is not English these issues if not catered for can hinder the inclusion of that demographic of student when establishing ground rules (Feiler and Watson, 2010). When discussing ground rules with learners it is important for me as the teacher to establish the rules of the student which may reflect their commitment to the teaching/learning relationship. My own ground rules would incorporate being fully prepared for lessons and ensuring I keep good time for classes to start and finish promptly. I would reciprocate to the students /learners’ commitment to completing assignments by making sure that all marking is completed and returned in equally good time. Further rules to ensure students get the most out of their learning experience encompasses my making sure all have an equal voice when expressing opinions (General Teaching Council, 2009). However, the issue of ground rules within the Teaching Codes of Conduct and Practice for Registered Teachers can produce ethical dilemmas such as
In addition to these standards, rights, and responsibilities, all teachers need to be consciously aware of possible problems dealing with students on an individual basis. In their mission of providing for the safety and welfare of all students, teachers can sometimes find themselves in situations that may be detrimental to themselves and their students. In practice, knowing how to avoid these situations is key. Dr. Troy Hutching’s presentation (Developing an Ethical Framework for Teacher Student Relationships: A Continuum of Responsibility, Nov. 1, 2011 Northern Arizona Univ.) was an eye opener. He provided the following startling facts: Shakeshaft (2004) reported 9.6% of grade 8-11
In her book Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Learning sector 2011 (P9), Ann Gravells explains that “Your main role as a teacher should be to teach your subject in a way that actively involves and engages your students during every session.” Beyond this, my role as a teacher of business management extends to firstly being an exemplar of good management practice, behaviour and conduct. I would need to be a positive role model to my students in interpersonal relationships, organisation, time management, leadership and other aspects of the role of a manager. My role as a teacher also extends to
During the first few weeks of school teachers should focus on teaching students appropriate classroom behavior, expectations and consequences. If they notice a student not interested in learning about the rules of the classroom, the teacher can take a little extra time with teaching the rules and its best that the teacher review the expectations each month, allowing the students to remember them. Following these guidelines will ensure a positive learning environment for every
It is important to establish appropriate behaviour and respect for others in order to fully realise the potential of all within and to ensure each student is safe from both physical and psychological harm. Appropriate behaviour must apply to both student and teacher. I, as a teacher, must follow a Code of Practice in order foster individual growth and learning. The principles of Good Practice are to treat people with care, respect and dignity. To recognise that I, as a teacher, am a trusted representative of my work place. I must ensure communication with students is open and clear and assess the risks to my students of the activities by carrying out a thorough risk assessment before each session.
Hi Joselyn, I love what you said about a teacher should teach the rules in a positive way to make sure the students knows them and reminds them of the rules and give them a second chance. You are right a lot of students doesn't know a lot of rules because they weren't taught certain rules. I agree with you about teachers should know where a child is having problems and also understand
I believe that in order to maintain a safe classroom-learning environment I as the teacher need to create and demonstrate positive boundaries, letting the students know that I am in charge. Setting constructive boundaries prevents conflict amongst students, instead of students correcting one another they allow me as the teacher to respond to inappropriate behaviors. Also as the teacher, I will demonstrate to my students how they should respond to inappropriate behavior from their peers.
Whilst planning learning, examples of boundaries to consider, are the requirements of the awarding body or the organisation the teacher is working for, along with legal obligations such as Health and Safety. The teacher should ensure compliance for their own and their students' wellbeing.
Describe what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be as a teacher / tutor in terms of the teaching / training cycle.
As a teacher my goal is to challenge students, cover the required curriculum and provide them with the necessary support and resources that will enable them to achieve to their best potential. My primary responsibility is to promote students’ social, emotional, intellectual and physical development as they learn. I believe that prevention of inappropriate behaviour needs to be applied within the classroom to enable students to be actively engaged with their learning. Thus, teaching young minds is a role which I believe is full of challenges, responsibilities and immense satisfaction.
One such standard of behaviour, is a high level of respect. Whitton et al. (2016) uphold this belief, as they state that students need to develop respect for each other and the teacher for group work to be beneficial and successful. Also, respect for the gaining of knowledge, power or knowledge and the specific content being explored is also imperative. Whitton et al. (2016) also raise the idea that a high level of respect must be maintained by all students. This is because even if only one student shows disrespect, their viewpoint can easily spread throughout the group and prevent the whole group from focusing on the activity and completing the work. Additionally, the use of good communication skills, both verbal and non verbal, must be enforced. This is pivotal for children to have able to share ideas, give suggestions and work effectively as a group. To make what behaviours are acceptable in the class clear to students, Whitton et al. (2016) suggests that teachers display a set of rules in the classroom and direct students’ attention to them at different times. In summary, the establishment of clear standards of behaviour will ensure that students work together harmoniously and
The job of being a teacher is not only challenging in the aspect of having to effectively teach students material and do such in a great learning environment, but teachers also have standards that they must practice to ensure that they are creating good learning environments for their students. Just as there are learning standards for the teachers to teach the students, there are standards that the teachers must learn before become truly effective teachers.
At the beginning of the school year, the teacher must ensure that he/she has classroom rules and procedures that are expected. Students are aware of the rules of the classroom and the teacher. When the teacher catches a student using appropriate behavior it is very important to praise them; focus more on the positive rather than dwelling on the negative actions. A teacher can place their hand on the student’s desk bringing them back the task.
Within the learning environment, setting ground rules is necessary. Ground rules set the expectation and also bring order to the classroom. Ground rules could be set around class management, punctuality, the use of mobile phones in class, talking while lessons are going on, respecting other people's opinions and properties in class and confidentiality in class. Method of setting ground rules could be done by discussing and agreeing with learners in the class, using posters at vantage points in class, using eye-catching power-point presentations. When the ground
I believe teachers need the respect of their students. To gain respect one must mind her own behavior not only in the classroom but also in the community. One way to gain mutual respect is to immediately become involved in the students life so the student doesn’t feel like they aren 't welcomed. Once we get involved in the students’ life and start collaborating with them and their parents/guardians, we are able to discover more about their background and learning style. It is important that we are considerate of various economic, social, cultural and religious barriers. I need to be prepared for every class and provide lessons that are free from any bias’ and custom to all the students learning needs. I believe that all teachers want to discipline their students rather than manage them. If we manage our students we are acting as the head person who has all control over them. If we discipline our students, we are instructing them on how to obey rules and follow certain behaviors and mannerisms that push towards a coach and teacher figure.
There are many different ways to run a successful and effective classroom. Numerous people have tried to give me the best advice for making things work, but ultimately it will be my choice to decide what works best for me. By assessing the students' needs, I will be able to provide a curriculum and classroom environment that will hopefully motivate their learning. In assessing my own needs, I can make the proper actions necessary to make sure that those needs are met. Rules and consequences fall under both the needs of the student and the teacher, so those are essential as well. In the following, I will discuss what I find to be the needs of the student, the needs of the teacher, and how my philosophy on rules, consequences, and
