Music is constantly in our lives. Whether listening to a country song at a coffee shop, or a rap song at a shoe store, music is all around us. Because of this, we are constantly buying music so that we can listen to the same songs over and over again. This is not a bad thing however, but some people abuse people’s necessity to own music by producing songs with the wrong messages. Some music can completely change the world with its message, but others can hurt it. If one walks down the hallways of this school, he will undoubtedly find people listening to music, but also people singing/rapping it, whether alone or with friends. Muses in Ancient Greece were known to represent the fine arts and all that was good about them. Music, poetry, …show more content…
“Live on! And be yourself! When I was in church they taught me something else. If you preach hate at the service, those words aren't anointed; That Holy Water that you soak in has been poisoned. When everyone else is more comfortable remaining voiceless, rather than fighting for humans that have had their rights stolen. I might not be the same but that's not important. No freedom til we're equal: Damn right I support it!” When he says when he was in church they taught him something else, he means that he was taught growing up that being gay is wrong, which is why he calls holy water poisoned. He explains how people would rather just watch things happen and be “voiceless” than do something about all the hate that is spread toward people with different beliefs. Macklemore does a great job in this song supporting homosexuals and telling them to stay strong, and that change will come if people decide they want it to. Everyday we hear about people committing suicide because they can’t deal with all the hatred in today’s society, which is why Macklemore is a muse, in my opinion, because he spreads hope to the ones that need it, when he could just as easily be “voiceless.” On the opposite side of the spectrum, Rick Ross, a former policeman, would be a monster in Ancient Greece, as he condones murder, rape, and violence in his song “U.O.E.N.O.”(You don’t even know). In the first verse of the song, he raps about various things but towards the end of the verse he says
In today’s society, music controls the way we live our lives. The influence that music has on society has broadened throughout the years and with social media being one of the world’s top priority, the fan base and spectrum for music in general has expanded significantly. Music is used to express feelings, moods, circumstances, experiences, knowledge, and so much more. With this being the case, the lyrics of any song can be interpreted differently by each and every listener. Many song lyrics give positive messages, promoting well-being, whiles others give negative messages, promoting violence, criminal behaviors, sexual contents, and disrespect towards others. With this being said, music reflects what the public demands, and in many cases the negative messages are often times what sells more than those music giving positive messages.
The appeal he uses most often is pathos, it is found throughout the song. Macklemore uses a word that is very hurtful to homosexuals: “faggots" (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). He uses it to show how people inappropriately use the word, but it is a word that causes a lot of pain to some people. His word choice is effective in bringing out emotion as in the line, “plagued by pain in their heart.” The choice to use the word plague describes just how bad the pain is. When people hear the word plague, we think of a widespread disease that affects hundreds and causes worldwide scare. He is saying that this pain is what they have in their heart every day. By using pathos to appeal to the emotion of love in every chorus, “my love, she keeps me warm,” Macklemore successfully tugs at a listener’s heartstrings because most can relate to the feeling of love in some way or another. Another phrase that he uses that applies to pathos is “some would rather die than be who they are.” In today's society, the topic of suicide is extremely emotional, which is what this lyric refers to. Macklemore uses a great deal of pathos appeal to reach out to his listeners and get his argument across.
For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Everyone uses music for something. Music connects with people and reaches them in ways that words simply cannot. Music is a representation of what feelings sound like. It expresses emotion and brings that characteristic out from within us; it tells us a story. Every generation has its’ own sound and different music styles have emerged and become
Music is a very powerful expression of emotions that come together as a whole to morph your psychological feelings into a sub-reality vision. Over the many years, history has been able to capture the moments at which music has made an impact on human lives. We can start with Manu Chao the artist that sings about left-wing messages and portrays his concerts as “collective therapy”. Or Juan Gabriel the young man that rose out of poverty to become the world’s most beloved artist/songwriter and whose music carried a resonate flamboyant style. Music is a way of communication that is used in many realms such as entertainment, tradition religion and sporting events. So far this semester, Chic 316 has influenced me to seek a more coherent relationship
Some may say music is just music; a song is just a song. However, music plays an enormous role in our psychology, because a single song has the ability to bring about many kinds of thoughts and emotions in the listener. Music is subtly one of the main factors in which people identify with certain groups and establish their belonging in society. It shapes people’s perspectives on how the world functions and the roles they play within it. Music can function the same way in a culture; it can reflect many of the culture’s values and ideologies. Music can have many effects on culture and the people’s idea of who they think they are within that culture. Music can serve in a way that promotes cultural identity and pride, yet it could also play a
Great music can sometimes can turn just an ordinary day into something magical, spiritual even. The effects music has on the human mind, can spread further; right through our genetic code and throughout our bodies. With all the good that can come with music, negative effects are not too far behind. Music has been the center focal point for parents and politicians alike to use it as a scapegoat to help push their political and parent agenda. To help mold children and adolescents into something they were never meant to be.
Music, “…one of the most widely used and appealing forms of communication…”, is universal and used for different purposes (Root, 2005, p. 7). Among the uses are “…play or entertainment, which humans of all ages engage in to stimulate feelings of joy, tension, and interaction, and enrich their experiences by adding mental complexity, counteracting boredom and lethargy” (Root, 2005, p. 7). In addition, music expresses “…emotions such as love, sentiment, or anger” (Root, 2005, p. 7). Ultimately, it communicates values showing the reality of society and culture. Anyone listening to “a few records [helps] enrich [their] feelings, extend [their] sense of love or despair, and feed [their] fantasies or fire some real relationship” (Cooper & Haverkos,
Do you remember waking up on a Sunday to old school music? It was the kind of music that makes you step side to side while your mother cleaned the house. The words were filled with emotion, as if a story was being told with deep connections. The rhythm helped you through situations. But violence has taken over the music industry and corrupted the minds of the younger generation. The generations grow juvenile, music has lost it’s sense of style, meaning, and brotherhood.
“Nothing is more singular about this generation than its addiction to music” (Bloom 68). While every person in the world knows this to be true, no one stops to consider whether the music society listens to is actually good for the mind. What people don’t realize is that music affects people’s morals, culture, education, laws, and the way society thinks. Music has proved to be helpful, but no one focuses on that aspect of it anymore. The people that music affects the most only care if they can dance to it.
It appeals to logos as the lyrics touch on commonly known problems in American history such as oppression, and discrimination, but also popular modern day practices that target the gay community such as using the word “gay” in a negative manner. The song appeals to ethos due to Macklemore being a very well-known figure in modern culture. Overall, it provides a positive message that tries to reach the ears of many in hopes that one day, we will not see love based on opposite gender, just as our society has been able to allow and accept people to love outside their religion and race.
Music is made up from rhythm and beats with notes and feelings, vocal and/or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Yet, music is so much more than notes on paper, music represents movements in time, music is memories, history, connections, relaxation and escape. Many people are influenced by music they listen to. “Music is much more than mere entertainment. It has been a feature of every known human society—anthropologists and sociologists have yet to find a single culture throughout the course of human history that has not had music” (Greenberg, 2016).
Music is one of the most popular ways of expression and has been for generations. It makes us want to dance, inspires, soothes, relaxes, and sometimes tells us a story. Music is something the whole world shares and has brought together different kinds of people. However, there has been a question on whether some music has affected society negatively and crossed the line with some of its lyrics, content, and the persona of the artists. Certain music has been boycotted and even banned in the U.S. Pro-censorship supporters say that music is something that can deeply affect our society especially children who should not have to be subjected to things like violence, sex, drugs, or hate. However, being that music is a form of expression,
Although artists do not create certain music to cure diseases or to make scientific or technological discoveries, music is one thing society can never live without. To both artists and their listeners, music provides an indispensible beauty that helps fulfill lives, and connect to nature. Music expresses the human condition in the purest way and affects everyone at a personal level. Plato, a well-known classical Greek philosopher once said, “If you want to measure the spiritual depth of society, make sure to mark its music.” Generally performer collaborate songs to represent the popular pop culture, and social issues, and wish for their society as well as their current era. For instance, controversial issues such as sex, violence, racism
Music is a form of expression that delivers a message. However over the years, the message of music has changed. Hundreds of years ago, music started with slaves. The slaves would sing spiritual hymns to motivate them and help keep up their spirits. Later, R&B and Hip Hop formed and at first there were motivational songs and rappers even rapped about a better life. But over the last thirty years the motivational songs have ceased. R&B and Hip Hop now is degrading to women, less subtle, and influences bad behavior.
In the song “Same Love” he uses strong lyrics to voice his message. People hear and feel music differently, this is how I interpret and analyzed the lyrics what they meant when I listened the lyrics. In one of Macklemore verses he states “Have you read the YouTube comments lately? “Man, that’s gay” gets dropped on the daily we become so numb to what we’re saying”(line 33-35). These lyrics show that Macklemore is not gay, but he still recognizes the animosity that homosexuals receive on a daily base. Not only in public homosexual get ridicule also on social networks where everyone could see. People use the word, gay without think what the words means. People don’t think how if you keep using the word gay as a derogatory term how might that affect someone that is gay or homosexual. In another part of macklemore lyrics he says “Gay is synonymous with the lesser” (40). People use the
