In our society, social networking has become very popular over the last 5 years. Twitter is a social networking site that allows users to become “followers” of other people and stay informed about current events and social trends. Many argue whether or not these social websites such as Twitter, are good for society. In two articles about Twitter, the authors present different arguments about why Twitter is good or bad for society. The author of “Heading off disaster, one Tweet at a time” by Jim Spellman, states that Twitter is a good way of communicating current events happening around the world. The other article, “Is Twitter Bad for National Security?” by Tony Bradley, argues that Twitter could have dangerous effects on our nation’s …show more content…
Social networking can also be very helpful with up to the minute severe weather warnings to better prepare people for tornadoes and flash flooding. The earlier that severe weather notification is received, the sooner people can plan to seek shelter and alert other Twitter followers of the changing weather conditions. Therefore by using Twitter as form of early notification for disasters, the loss of people or property may be prevented. While one author thinks that Twitter can be a good resource for information concerning public events or breaking news, Bradley thinks otherwise. Bradley argues that social networking sites such as Twitter can be detrimental to society. Bradley disputes that although Twitter is a public forum, the content on Twitter be should be monitored. Bradley states that Tweeting the agenda of your day may not seem like any harm, “however when the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee sends out tweets like 'Just landed in Baghdad. I believe it may be the first time I've had bb [short for Blackberry] service in Iraq. 11th trip here.’ and then proceeds to tweet about the movements of his party through the Green Zone, flying by helicopter, etc.” This gives valuable information to terrorists because now they know that a high ranking official is in the country and they know his whereabouts. Terrorists can then use this information to plan an attack. This official was probably not aware of the mistake that
“Social media makes the community part of the actual crisis communication response. For example…Twitter was used to quickly share initial information and updates during the 2007 and 2008 California wildfires, 2008 Mumbai massacre, 2009 crash of US Airways Flight 1549, 2010 Haiti earthquake, and 2011 Tunisian uprising.” This information, again in Veil’s 2011 article, reinforces the idea of how social media communication is highly beneficial and furthers an individual’s ability to remain informed on current events.
“‘Tweet. Tweedle-lee-Dee’ (118 Character Left),” by Olivia Fletcher writes from the definition pattern of development. Fletcher’s thesis was, “Since those days, the tweet has morphed into a word whose meaning your great grandfather could have never imagined when he was listening to Day’s hit on Billboard’s Hot 100.” The author organizes her content into different segments; first she explains the history of the new definition of a tweet and she also compares Twitter and Facebook. Her next two paragraphs summarize the negative effects of tweeting, and these paragraphs also include a precis of a “Twitter war” between John Mayer and Perez Hilton. The last two paragraphs in the body discuss the positive effects of tweeting in schools. In the final
Communicating graphical messages among humans has had many forms over the centuries, from cave painting, clay tables, art, manuscripts, books and newspapers to name a few. Now in the information age humans have continued to evolve to convey messages using the internet via blogging, social networks and internet articles. From tweets, Facebook post, and emoji’s, humans continue to develop and adopt shorter ways to communicate and express their thoughts with each other. Journalist are held to a higher standard and are expected to diligence when reporting the news, they are expected to deliver reliable, responsible journalism, but in this ever changing fast pace world is Twitter the best mechanism for responsible journalist, especially when they only have 140 characters to inform the reader with the latest news?

Twitter has allowed us to connect and share our thoughts through social networking across the globe, where we are restricted to a 140 word count limit; this inability provokes for
Social networking sites such as Twitter has made a tremendous change, in the aspects of how people network and communicate with each other over the past couple of years. Remarkably, Twitter was created in March 2006. By February 2010, the hype of this self-styled “New Twitter Experience,” Twitter users were sending out over 50 million tweets per day. In Peggy Orenstein’s article “I Tweet, Therefore I Am,” she exploits the argument that people should tweet for themselves, and not for the pleasing of their followers. Even though, since the article was featured in the The New Your Times. The relevance of this article was intended to be read by the readers of The Times, which most of them were businessmen and politicians between ages of 30-35. Nevertheless, this article was written on July 30th 2010, printed, and published in the book, The
While Damon Linker’s article, “Twitter is Destroying America” seems to be less effective than Parker’s, it still contains some powerful uses of the rhetorical devices. Like Parker, Linker establishes ethos by
As technology evolves, so does our way of communication, from writing letters, to sending emails, and now through different social media platforms; Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. The topic social media has always been a phenomenon, and has led to interesting debates and research on whether or not social media have made us more social or, ironically, more unsocial. An article written by Winter, parents stated that children would rather play online games with other Internet friends, rather than actually go out and play with them (Winter, 2013). People are in a way more connected, but they are not together.
In today's time, social media is widely used by most people and most who use it claims that it is beneficial to their everyday lives. Many people argue that social media is bad for others because it is distracting them and causing themselves harm by falling or running into others but that is because they dont pay attention, with the right amount of awareness it is very helpful. For some the only way to stay connected to businesses, familly, friends, and world problems is through places like Facebook and Twitter. Social media is more helpful in more ways than one especially when trying to get communications long distances.
Like technology, our species has adapted to fit modern times. Through these adaptations, we have begun to communicate through our newly developed technology by means of social media. In today’s society, we are surrounded by sites such as Facebook, Twitter, E-Mail, and various other websites that can often times consume our lives. While social media has plenty of advantages, it also has disadvantages that often times get ignored. As Internet users, it is important to examine these disadvantages and make sure we understand the negative sides to social media.
Countries such as China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan are all on the brink of banning the use of all social media in their countries. These countries are still waiting to reap the benefits, if any, from watching its citizens and vice versa. All the countries seem to get close to banning social media, but the citizens come together and prove how watching each other on social media can help. These countries have all experienced the positive and negative affects that of the use of social media in their countries. Another form of watching that is taking place is through the sports world in America. Any athlete at such a distinguished level will say how limited they are in what they post on their social media accounts. There are too many young and influential minds that could easily repeat a bad act. One of the worst forms of watching or, in this case, being watched is through terrorist organizations. These organizations will lure in easily influenced kids to get them to fight against the United States. Social media watching is not all sunshine and rainbows, it can turn out to be thunderous when it comes to
Since we are given these incredible tools to communicate, we need to use them. An example of a time that social media was used for good was last year when the Stop Kony campaign was trending on twitter. At it’s most popular time, #StopKony was tweeted more 1200 times a minute. The Stop Kony marketing team created a video as an experiment, having no idea that they would change the
The project aim at teenagers, therefore sample group is between 13 to 19. I will set the sample sizes in 50 participants since it is easy to identity and more precision. If a sample sizes increase, it is very hard to estimate and become not accurate. Also, I’m worry about the extremes data can’t make a balance out, so the project prefers small sample sizes. It can take less effort to gain and maintain people, it is easy to produce significant results and comfortable to find a group of people. I will obtain samples from friends or friends’ sister and brother.
Social networking is a way for people to connect and share information with each other online.
The use of Social media has flourished to a great extent in today’s world. It has played a significant role by providing a platform for people to connect, communicate, share ideas and so on. Facebook, twitter, Instagram are some of the most common social networking sites that usually intrigue us. The day is not far where everyone in this world will have a Facebook account one day. We obviously know the benefits are derived from the use of social media, but have you ever thought that it can also lead you to a serious threat? I personally liked social networking until I found that it advocates laziness by wasting my precious time. Indeed, I was just thinking about this today and how awesome it was a decade ago when friends would call me just to say hi. Nowadays, it seems everything that is posted is like my junk mail full of advertisements and borrowed quotes. I came to realize that Social Media is actually not secure these days. You’ll be surprised how the evolution of technology has had an adverse effect on this growing society. So, is social media really a blessing?
