Leadership is the most essential aspect of a successful operation; without a leader there is no concise direction or defined power in charge. A leader’s intangibles and instincts must be sharp, knowing that everything hinges on their ability to place their people in the best possible situations to thrive. For as long as humanity has existed, man has always had a leader; both good and bad leaders, qualified or unqualified. People are divided on the concept of what a leader is. Are leaders naturally born? What makes up a leader? How do we determine a leader?

If leaders are simply born that way then what is the point of leadership development. The answer perhaps creates controversy because the answer is simply both. Clearly there are those who have certain abilities that allow them to more easily assume leadership roles while others of us work to develop the necessary skills. The reality is that each person is unique in their skills and abilities as is each leader. One may be charismatic while another is empathetic, one may have clear vision another remarkable communication skill. Some leaders are born, breed, or chosen. But the leader I chose to write about he became. I'm talking about Martin Luther King Jr. An American Baptist minister who became a leader for African-American Civil Rights Movement and had executive impact. He was able to unite people together to have a voice, and change a nation. It was a time when many African Americans were treated very harshly and unequal. It was a time of violence and fear. But one man was able to help thousands of people overcome that fear and speak up by his side. He had an aura around him that I don't think many people have. The idea that someone is born a leader is wrong: there is a leader inside of everyone but it takes determination and patience to develop the skills necessary to become one. When describing oneself as and more so as a leader, the true picture is not likely to be achieved because there can be exaggerations to self description. The task of becoming a leader has many aspects that need to be considered. Some people say that there are people who are born to be leaders and I believe that this is somewhat true. There are others who become leaders because of situations or aspects in their life that then force them to become a leader. Regardless of how someone becomes a leader, there are certain things that leaders need to do and certain characteristics that they need to have in order to make sure that their goals are achieved in their leadership position. I do not believe that I am a person who was born with the traits that make me a natural leader. Growing up when I first heard about leadership I was told one of the false leadership myth and that is, leaders are born. I grew up with that mindset and so did a lot of us. The article also includes information on specific traits an effective leader may possess. Riggio (2009) says,
