With so many accounts to follow and so much to keep up with, how do we view and absorb this information. Well, it certainly depends on whom you follow. Twitter now has a feature that automatically follows accounts specified to the interests you provide when you first create your own account. Since I recently made an account for school, I was prompted to choose a few interests. I chose your generic topics at first (music, news, comedy, ect.). However, I also followed some of my own unique interests such as costuming, anime, languages, and of course, Panic! At the Disco. What does Twitter do with this information? What types of things are people Tweeting about? I'd say there are about three generic categories you can sort a tweet into. Scrolling through your feed, you'll likely find that a large chunk of your Twitter posts looks strikingly similar. On my personal Twitter, I stumbled upon Tweets from Food Network and Vogue Runway. Food and fashion are rather common interests, however, these two tweets are slightly different in content. Food Network wishes to inform you of what will be airing later that night and is very clear and to the point. Vogue Runway is slightly more vague in their phrasing and encourages followers to clink on the link provided, rather than know all by simply looking at the tweet. Schulz focuses on her actions and feelings upon using a social media site known as Twitter by introducing her bias, excessive use, and the impact Twitter left on her. First of all, Schulz explains how social media in general isn’t what she finds interesting. According to CNBC News “Twitter has 200 million active users, 70 percent of whom live outside the U.S., tweeting in 35 diverse languages”. We live in a world where digital devices have made it easier for us to be connected to loads of people all the time. Every day, we’re habitually texting, online checking email, and scrolling our social media accounts. A study reported that 52% of students use internet 2 to 6 hours daily, 90% use social networking sites, 93% send or receive an email, and 23% said they send over 100 text messages per day (Doyle). Social media has made it accessible for us to engage with others without meeting them in person. Damaging effects of online socialization have been well-documented; nevertheless, these endless studies play on people’s anxieties, insecurities, and ultimately their happiness. Experts have been arguing that social media is disconnecting us from the bigger picture by making us anti-social and depressed. Ethan Kross, a social psychologist and the lead author of a University of Michigan study, found that “the more often people used Facebook, the more their moods dropped” (Kross). On a positive note, social media is a tool that can generate happiness and virtually deliver joy across the globe to billions of people.
