Status of Women in India
To understand the actual status of women It is very essential to study the historical background thoroughly. The status of women has gone through the different stages from liberation to subjugation and from subjugation to empowerment. It is not easy to find answers to questions like when did women start losing their status or who was responsible for this situation. To understand the status we need to divide the pre independence period in different segments Ancient, Medieval, British and Contemporary Period. Ancient Period--It cannot be clearly stated whether men and women got equal rights during the Vedic period. But available sources show that liberal attitudes and practices towards women did exist. Women were actively involved in religious and social activities. They had freedom to choose their partner in marriage and a widow was permitted to remarry.
In ancient India, respect was given to women as mother 's image, a symbol of life, strength and purity, with immense capacity for patience, sacrifice and sufferings. In the Vedic and Upanishad period women enjoyed significant freedom so far as political, social and educational activities were concerned and consequently enjoyed a status and prestige in society. In homes, women were given a greater position to that of men. As they were treated as the personification of the goddess of wealth, strength and wisdom- Woman was depicted as 'Shakti ', and it was an accepted belief that where a woman is
“The idea that men and women should play different roles in society is an ancient concept.” It is the 21st century. Men and women should have equal rights by now. An examination of primary and secondary sources will reveal the historical significance of Women’s rights.
Patriarchal societies treated women like objects and possessions, but this slightly changed as we entered into the medieval period. We can clearly see this laid out in the ancient writings of Confucius and the through the treatment of women and their rights after the Vedic period.
Throughout history, women have been unsure about where they stand in history. However, women may have had a stronger role than what they realize. Many people could tell you important Greeks, Romans or even early English folks; however, a great majority of these people were men. Although men have taken credit throughout history, women have been holding together our society without the fame, praises or glory. In 2015, it is evident that all people should be equal in a society because women and men are both equally intelligent, morals now indicate that women are equal and should be treated with respect, and they are obviously needed within a population.
In America, people have denied women their rights for many “reasons” like women are not emotionally stable enough to make big decisions, to women are weak and cannot do what a man can do. Another argument is that women have equal rights and that may be true to an extent but most women do not call all the rights woman have equal. The feminist movements in the past were about not only struggles white women had to go through, but also African American and Hispanic women had to deal with. Women were categorized which caused men to look, talk to, and act around women. Things such as equal right, rape culture, and equal pay, women and feminist are still dealing with in todays’ day and age. Most women do not realize how many rights we still don’t have that feminist are ether addressing right now or issues that have barely been brought up. There are two paths that feminism can take, the road to success and equality or the road to devastation and loss. There are many positive and negative ideologies that may happen in the future and are brought to the surface, but the main questions are, what is exactly the problem? What needs to change? And why will our society not except the idea of equality of women and men? The significance of changes in the future means that the feminist movement will make the changes they have worked towards for many years, or feminism will take a turn for the worse.
In the world that we live in women are still faced with many issues on a daily basis. Women are seen as less inferior then men, and this notion can be diminishing for how women are seen in the work place. The world is stuck on the reasoning of keeping things the same and remaining in the status quo, which is keeping traditional roles for men and women the same. Women are perceived as being the caretakers, nurtures, sympathetic, empathetic and over all nice. While men are seen as being assertive, self-reliant, head strong and leaders,. The qualities of women can be seen as being a pushover and can be a less attractive candidate for a position than hiring a man for the same position. In the work force women face issues that hinders them from being successful such as stereotypes, sexual harassment, and systematic justification.
The economic, social and political status of women have direct bearings on the level of fertility in any society. Where women 's roles are exclusively defined in terms of household management and matrimonial duties, as is the case in Ethiopia, they are subject to the expectation that they replenish the race by bearing a large number of children and assume full responsibility for maintaining them almost single handedly. Since women are, by and large, economically dependent on men, the decision to have or not have children rests, primarily in the husband and his relatives. The conscious but unarticulated realization that not all children born survive, serves as an inducement to high fertility performance in order to
As an individual's life is constantly progressing throughout a variety of perspectives, the conflicts of the person's life becomes greater and these issues can be very complex. In the terms of injustice and hardships, it is quite difficult to address these issues and to cope with them. Privilege is a term that is described as an unearned right that is given to an individual for the purpose of a specific power solely on a basis of one's culture, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. It is important to acknowledge privilege as many people have entitlements in some kind of way and they can misuse it and use it to their advantage in negative ways, which can be the cause oppression against another individual. I am going to discuss the content of 'invitation' and reflect aspects of my life which I have greater power and privilege than others. The questions corresponding to this article is why are you interested in exploring these issues related to privilege? and is your interest connected in any particular hopes for your work, for your life, for the world in which we live.
Since the beginning of time, society has considered women inferior to men. Men, especially in time of war, subjugate women and this form of expression, whether in times of war or not, should not be accepted as the norm or be considered as acceptable.
Throughout history and civilization women seem to have been in a constant state of evolution either towards a submissive role or a strong role but nonetheless, changing. This paper will discuss women from the lower and middle ranks in history and their status in the various civilizations.

The status of the world’s women is not only a matter of morality and justice. It is also a political, economic, and social imperative. The evidence is irrefutable: when women are free to develop their talents and contribute fully to their societies, everyone benefits.
After reading the report The Status of Women and Girls in Colorado I was in a numbing type of shock. There were things that I subconsciously knew like men will receive more than women in their lifetime but after reading facts that solidify this it was surprising. One of the findings that surprised me the most was with Social Security benefits that Men once 65 years or older will receive around $1,334 while women the same age are only going to receive $986. Many of the facts such as these were shocking sometime syou know things and you see them in your world but after reading facts that prove and solidify what a person has seen it 's an eerie feeling. Especially since it is not just one thing that can be attributed to the why women are
As a woman I have no country. As a woman I want no country. As a woman, my country is the whole world.”
The development of women's roles started in the reign of the King Rama IV. The King Rama IV had studied a lot of western literatures and he realized and understood the importance of gender equality. The first action was the passing of a law that prohibited men from selling their wives and prohibited parents from
It is a trite fact that women have been a subjugated section of the society in India. It is also a known fact that the women have earlier been deprived of their real place in the society. This has happened despite the fact that ancient Indian texts have advocated honour and dignity for the women. This phenomenon has perpetrated even in the modern work place scenario in India. The working women, in India, face a lot of gender biases. These biases hinder the professional growth of the working women. The working women always have to work on a tightrope in order to balance the duties at home and the duties at the work place. But, it is most unfortunate that inspite of this the work of the women is not appreciated and not given their due. The
