George Sylvester Viereck

Blazes like a mighty sword
Leaping to the fight.

Clasped like some strange book of sorcery.

Her kisses burn where they close and cling
Like pain of longing or fire of hell.

Deep as the bottomless pit.

A thing as fleeting as the thin sea-foam.

Flickering like a flame, half choked by wind and dust.

Like doves before the gathering storm.

Pale sad faces like faint flames dying.

The air is thick as incense-wreaths
That waver in the candles’ gleam.
