John T. Trowbridge

Careless as are the brooks, or birds that sing,
Of any other song of brook or bird.

Wailing creak,
Like an almost human shriek.

Fair as lily leaves.

Like an angel’s pinion, fluttereth.

Like birds from the nest when their wings have grown.

Resplendent as a beam of the morning star.

Like a proudly waving plume.

Shrinks like a beggar in the cold.

Hopes deep sunken like anchors under the ice.

Thick as sparks above the rushing train.

Thick as three rats in a little boy’s stocking.

White as the down of an angel’s wings.
