By The Rock with Runes

Heinrich Heine (1799–1856)

THERE looms in the sea the rock with runes—

I sit with my memory roaming.

The wind and the seagulls shriek their tunes,

The waves are wandering and foaming.

I loved—ah, many a dearest child,

And many a comrade yonder!

Where are they gone? The wind is wild,

The waves—they foam and wander.
