Imitated from a Latin couplet on Joannes Mirandula:—

Joannes jacet hic Mirandula: cætera norunt

Et Tagus et Ganges—forsan et Antipodes.

First applied by Pope to Francis Chartres, but published in this form in 1727.

HERE lies Lord Coningsby—be civil!

The rest God knows—perhaps the Devil.
