James Wood, comp. Dictionary of Quotations. 1899.

Otway

Children blessings seem, but torments are, / When young, our folly, and when old, our fear.

Clocks will go as they are set; but man, irregular man, is never constant, never certain.

Fine speeches are the instruments of knaves / Or fools, that use them when they want good sense; / Honesty needs no disguise or ornament.

Greatness, thou gaudy torment of our souls, / The wise man’s fetter and the rage of fools.

Justice is lame as well as blind among us.

No flattery, boy; an honest man can’t live by ’t; / It is a little sneaking art, which knaves / Use to cajole and soften fools withal.
