Alexander Ross (1699–1784)
Ross, Alexander. A Scotch poet; born in Aberdeenshire, April 13, 1699; died at Lochlee, Angus, May 20, 1784. He wrote verses from his childhood, but published nothing until age sixty-nine, when he brought out ‘Helenore, or the Unfortunate Shepherdess’ (1768), written in the Buchan dialect, which became exceedingly popular in the north of Scotland. He also left in MS. eight volumes of miscellanies.
