Anthony Ashley Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury (1621–1683)

Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley Cooper, First Earl of. An English statesman; born in Wimborne, St. Giles, Dorsetshire, July 22, 1621; died in Amsterdam, Jan. 22, 1683. He was a conspicuous figure in the history of his times; was the Achitophel of Dryden’s satire. Ashley and Cooper rivers, in South Carolina, received their names from him. His ‘Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, and Times’ is a collection of his various writings.
