August Weismann (18341914)
Weismann, August (vīs’män). A celebrated German zoölogist; born at Frankfort on the Main, Jan. 17, 1834; died in 1914. He became professor at Freiburg (1871). He denies the possibility of the inheritance of acquired characters. Among his principal works are: ‘Studies in the Theory of Descent’ (1880); ‘Essays on Heredity’ (London, 1888–92); ‘Germ Plasm’ (London, 1893); etc.
