Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle (17571657)
Fontenelle, Bernard le Bovier de (fôt-nel’). A distinguished French essayist; born at Rouen, Feb. 11, 1657; died at Paris, Jan. 9, 1757. A gift of popular exposition made his historical, philosophical, moral, and scientific writings highly esteemed. Best known among them are: ‘Dialogues of the Dead, after the Manner of Lucian’ (1683); ‘Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds’ (1686), ‘History of the Oracles’ (1686).
