Ælianus, Claudius (ē-li-ā’nus). A Roman sophist. Of his works, written in Greek, three are extant: ‘Peasants’ Letters,’ purporting to be written by peasants in Attica; ‘Various Histories,’ or narratives, in 14 books; ‘Of the Nature of Animals,’ anecdotes of animals.
