George Washington Doane (1799–1859)

Doane, George Washington. An American bishop of the Episcopal Church; born in Trenton, NJ, May 27, 1799; died on April 27, 1859. His publications consist of public addresses, and a book of poems entitled ‘Songs by the Way’ (1824). Many of his verses are found in collections; among which are the familiar lines, ‘What is That, Mother?’; ‘Softly ‘Now the Light of Day’; and ‘Thou Art the Way.’
