George Wood (1799–1870)

Wood, George. An American writer and chief of a division in the U.S. Treasury Department; born in Newburyport, MA, in 1799; died at Saratoga, NY, Aug. 24, 1870. He published: ‘Peter Schlemihl in America’ (1848); ‘The Modern Pilgrim’ (1855); ‘Marrying Too Late’ (1856); ‘Future Life’ (1858), reissued as ‘The Gates Wide Open’ (1869).
