Giovanni Morelli (1816–1891)

Morelli, Giovanni (mō-rel’ē). A distinguished Italian art critic; born in Verona, Feb. 25, 1816; died in Milan, Feb. 28, 1891. His fame rests principally upon the ‘Critical Art Studies in Italian Painting’ (1890–93), devoted to the Borghese and Doria Pamfili galleries in Rome, the Munich and Dresden galleries, and that of Berlin. He bequeathed his valuable collection of paintings to his native city.
