Henri Frédéric Amiel (18211881)
Amiel, Henri Frédéric (ä-mē-el’). A distinguished Swiss essayist, philosophical critic, and poet; born at Geneva, Sept. 27, 1821; died there, March 11, 1881. He is author of several works on the history of literature, as ‘The Literary Movement in Romanish Switzerland’ (1849); ‘Study on Mme. de Staël’ (1878); and of several poems, among them ‘Millet Grains’ (1854). But his fame rests principally on the ‘Journal,’ which appeared after the author’s death (1882–4). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
