Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (16051689)
Tavernier, Jean-Baptiste (tä-vern-yā’). A celebrated French traveler; born at Paris, 1605; died at Copenhagen, 1689. He traveled in every country of Europe, in Persia, Mongolia, India, Sumatra, Batavia, etc., and amassed an enormous fortune. He wrote: ‘Travels in Turkey, Persia, and India’ (1679).
