John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester (1647–1680)

Rochester, John Wilmot, Earl of. An English satirist and verse-writer; born at Ditchley, Oxfordshire, April 10, 1647; died on July 26, 1680. He became a favorite at the court of Charles II., and wrote songs and satires in accordance with prevailing taste. His ‘Poems and Familiar Letters’ were posthumously published.
