Joseph Ritson (1752–1803)

Ritson, Joseph. An English antiquary and scholar; born at Stockton-on-Tees, Oct. 2, 1752; died at Hoxton, Sept. 2, 1803. He devoted many years to antiquarian researches, and edited a vast number of reprints of old and rare books. His own works include: ‘Observations on Warton’s History of English Poetry’ (1782); ‘Ancient Songs from the Time of King Henry III. to the Revolution’ (1790); ‘A Collection of Scottish Songs’ (1794); ‘Robin Hood Ballads’ (1795); ‘Bibliographia Poetica’ (1802); ‘Ancient English Metrical Romances’ (1802); and many others.
