Matteo Bandello (14851561)
Bandello, Matteo (bän-del’lō). An Italian novelist; born at Castlenuovo, Piedmont, 1485; died in 1561. A roving cleric, he became bishop of Agen in 1550. His Novelle or tales, 214 in number, present vivid delineations of the loose manners of those times, and have frequently served as a source to many succeeding story-writers and dramatists.
