Nicolas Louis de La Caille (17131762)
La Caille, Nicolas Louis de (lä-käy’). A noted French astronomer (1713–62). He spent three years in making astronomical observations at the Cape of Good Hope. His principal writings are: ‘The Foundations of Astronomy’ (1757); ‘Solar Tables’; ‘The Southern Starry Heavens’ (1763); a catalogue of 10,000 southern stars; elementary treatises on ‘Mathematics’ (1741), ‘Mechanics’ (1743); ‘Astronomy’ (1746); ‘Optics’ (1750).
