Richard Hakluyt (c. 1553–1616)

Hakluyt, Richard (hak’löt). An English churchman geographer; born in Herefordshire (or London?) in 1552 or 1553; died on Nov. 23, 1616. In 1589 (enlarged 1598–1600) appeared his great collection: ‘The Principall Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation.’ The Hakluyt Society, of London, which publishes old and rare books on geography and navigation, was named in his honor.
