Robert Southwell (c. 1561–1595)

Southwell, Robert. An English poet and Jesuit martyr; born about 1561; executed at Tyburn, Feb. 21, 1595. He wrote: ‘Consolation for Catholics’ (1586?), a prose work; but his literary fame rests upon his poems, the longest of which is ‘St. Peter’s Complaint,’ while the best is generally considered to be ‘The Burning Babe.’
